Advantages: MDLP technology, Lightweight, Extra-long battery life

Disadvantages: None i could find

Sony's latest minidisc recorder is the premium model in the new Sony range which also includes the MZ-R500, 700 and 750. The MZ-R900 comes in different colors, silver, blue, red and white are of the few colors i have seen already.

The MZ-R900 is the replacement of the older version which is the controversial R91. The R900 beats its predecessor in all aspects. It is smaller and lighter. The R900 comes with a small clip on pouch which is both very smart looking and conveniently fits either into your pocket or clips on your belt if your running with it maybe. It is worthy to note that it does not jump at all even through sprinting, unlike the R55 which i used to own which did jump despite the manual and reviews saying it wouldnt. Other excellent features on this minidisc is its extralong playback life after its full charged, which is around 66 hours (very impressive!) Imagine listening to your minidisc all through the week for 4 hours a day and still having almost half the battery life in there.

The main reason though why i chose the R900 over any other minidisc player on the market is its MDLP facility. What this is, is basically a new compression mechanism invented by Sony which allows you to record 4 full CD's onto one 74min mindisc. You can easily toggle through the recording options of LP (lonplay) from LP2 to LP4 to mono. In theory i think you lose quality as the compression increases, however this is not aparent on the LP2 mode which allows you to record about 160 min, even in the LP4 (about 220min) sound quality is hardly affected. In mono obviously you lose quality as you realise from the name MONO.

The R900 is equiped with a good looking LCD display remote control which is very convenient for when playing sport or just walking around with it. It also works perfectly, no glitches so far. In addition the MZ-R900 is packed with many other options like naming tracks, making them still or scroll across the screen, setting the ti
me and many more.

To conclude, i think the R900 is definetly the best buy on the market. And its definetly worth the extra quids you pay over cheaper MD's of competing brands simply because you get such good value out of it. I've bought it on pre-order when it first came out, which is almost 3 months ago now, i have not had a single problem with it. Buy it now!!
