Advantages: Longplay mode, light, small, speed change facility, remote control.
Disadvantages: Headphones are not very good
Blue, sleek design, light, small, superb remote control and all for under £200? Too good to be true? No, not with the Sony MZR-900. I bought this fantastic Minidisc player last week for £200, instead of the High Street price of £230. I opted for the blue design instead of the silver one-everyone with a Minidisk player had a silver one! (Other colours are available, including red and white). When it came in the post, I got quite excited and ripped off the wrapping. I opened the small, mobile phone sized box and saw the instruction booklet. I pushed it aside and underneath, to my delight, I saw a baby blue Sony Minidisc player. I pulled it out of its bubble wrap and felt the cool metal on my hand. I was holding a £200 piece of equipment in my hand, and yet it was so small! For a moment I just looked at it, then I looked inside the rest of the box. I found a extremely light remote control, and I am talking a few grams! I also found some Sony headphones, a dry battery case, a pouch, a digital recording cable, a rechargeable battery and an AC adapter for charging the battery. I put it all together, and viola! I had my Minidisc player! First, I ran upstairs to get my blank minidisks and the cable I had bought the day before. I then turned on my PC, went to the music folder, and started recording Beanie Man – Girls Dem Sugar. I hadn’t read the manual much, just skimmed through it, so I didn’t know the buttons. But I easily figured them out on both the remote control and the actual player. To my surprise, you can do every single command you can do on the player, on the remote control itself! The remote control is also indigo backlit. You can input names of songs, even whilst they are playing. When you have finished writing the letters, you can see it moving across the remote control/player screen. You can also change the bass of the music. If you go to the menu on the remote control, you can even change the speed of the
song! You can make it up to 70% slower or 20% faster. It’s quite fun! There are hold buttons on both the remote control and the player so when it is in your pocket, no buttons will be pressed. One of the best things about this Minidisc player is that you can record your music in longplay format. This means you can fit either 80 minutes of sound (normal), 160 minutes of sound (LP2 stereo), 320 minutes of sound (LP4 stereo), or 160 minutes of sound (Monaural) all onto one minidisk! That is like recording four CD’s onto one tiny Minidisc! The disadvantage of using longplay is that the music quality is not as good, although I have not noticed any difference, even in LP4 mode. If you have a Sony Discman which has the capability of CD text, you can transfer the text directly from your Discman! This is quite good as it saves a lot of time writing track names again. The battery life of the rechargeable battery is amazing! It lasts a huge 66 hours when fully charged! Overall, I am very happy with my purchase. The only bad thing about it is the headphones, which are very poor, as they are big, uncomfortable and the wire is very small! But I will soon be buying Sony Grooevjet headphones-after all, I paid £200 for the player, so I might as well listen to the music properly!
