Apple iPod (5G) 80 GB
Advantages: Compact, stores loads
Disadvantages: Difficult to find matching accessories, scratches easily
What is an mp3 player:
Sorry if this is really patronising (and potentially wrong), but I get asked about my ipod everytime I go to the gym, so this is my basic understanding of it. An Mp3 player is like a CD player except that it stores songs on it in "Mp3" form - basically as a music file. Depending on the size of your mp3 player you will be able to store anything between 50 and 20,000 songs. I believe it gives a better sound quality, but as you can tell I am a bit of a technophobe.
Why choose this mp3 player:
I have had a mini ipod and a 60gb black ipod and found it easy to use and load up, plus the itunes library I have is already loaded up and ready to go. If you have an itunes library you can set up a number of different ipods on it - my mum and dad run theirs off my itunes, but we don't all have the same songs. Also I think the ipods are the best looking players around, coming in many differenct colours and sizes, with lots of accessories available for them. It has a colour screen and can load home photographs and videos on. Also very soon we will be getting the American style iTunes which means we will be able to download films and tv shows straight to our ipods.
I bought mine from Play.com for £214.99, it had free P&p and arrived within 2 days of placing the order.
The ipod comes in a black box about the size of a double cd case. It comes along with a usb connector, an iTunes 7 installation disc, the white apple in ear earphones, earphone protectors and of course the ipod itself.
10.4cm (l) x 6cm (h) x 1cm (d)
This ipod has a glossy black cover with softer rubber like operation wheel. The back is metal with the apple logo on the back. You can get this engraved with other things if it is a present. Although this looks sleek and sexy, it does scratch easy so it is probably best to invest in a cover or don't put it in a bag with your keys!
Has an 80gb in built hard drive
Holds up to 100 hours of video
2.5 inch (diagonal) colour screen with over 65,000-color liquid crystal display with white LED backlight
Supports AAC, MP3, MP4 Mpeg, AIFF and WAV files
Installation of software:
Is very easy and takes about 5 minutes, you put the CD in and click install. It will ask you to register your details and ipod serial number (which is available on your ipods setting menu.) This is in case your ipod breaks or is stolen.
Once the iTunes software is installed it is very easy to use. If you are uploading songs from a cd, you put the cd in, the iTunes kick in and then select open with iTunes, it will search the database and identify the album and all the songs. Then you just click import songs. On my laptop, which is almost prehistoric it takes about 30 seconds a song to convert to the library where everything is stored.
If you are using iTunes to buy a song/ album you simply look through the iTunes store which has the latest charts, or search for a song/ artist with the search facility in the top right hand corner. You will need to set up an iTunes account, with some bank details so be careful as it is easy to spend a fortune without realising. Once you have decided to buy it will download straight into your library. If you buy a song off and album and later decide you want the whole album, it will automatically deduct the price of the song you already have so you aren't paying twice.
There is a way of sharing your itunes library with up to five other computers but I am not entirely sure about this - I know my brother uses mine but he has my password and user name.
To charge your ipod you can either buy a wall adapter - that you plug you usb connector into, or plug it into your computer, it will automatically update songs and begin charging. A full charge will take up to 5 hours, but this will give you about 20 hours of listening time (obviously this will drop dramatically if you are watching videos.)
The battery is often seen as the biggest problem with ipods - I have been told they will last between 500 and 1000 charges.
Loading movies/ photos:
If you want to put pictures onto your ipod make a folder somewhere on your computer and put all the pictures/ movies in. In your settings section of your itunes it will give you a browsing facility to find that folder - you select that folder and the pictures will automatically be uploaded next time you connect your ipod.
How the ipod works:
Once you are loaded up with songs you are good to go. To switch the ipod on just press the centre of the control wheel which will bring up the apple logo on the screen. It will then go to your main menu. To scroll up and down the menu you simply roll your fingers around the wheel anticlockwise (up) or clockwise (down.) A coloured bar will indicate where you are on the menu so when you are at your desired location press the middle button again.
The music is stored via artist, via song title and via album so you can listen to a whole album or just one song.
You can also make a playlist of all your favourite songs by clicking and holding on a song, or by making it on itunes.
There are additional features such as an alarm, calendar, address book, games, although I rarely use these facilities.
I love my ipod, it gives me an added kick when in the gym and makes a long journey go quicker! It is easy to load up, gives good sound quality and has a good quality of pictures and videos.
The main problems I have with it are that the main accessories for this are all designed fo the white ipod, and the screen scratches too easily. Also if you are using the standard headphones they do tend to fall out at the gym - or maybe I have strange ears.
Summary: Great mp3 player
