Advantages: Ease of use, nothing complicated.

Disadvantages: Are newer and larger iPods available.

I've had my mini for at least 2005 and is a 2nd generation model. This excellent device has served me well since bought and I have had no troubles with it at all. It has all the basic functions you would expect. It plays music, has a calendar, and even has a few basic games.

Whilst the screen is only a basic LCD with no colour, the back light is strong enough so you will always know what's on screen. I have even used it as a search light one or twice.

The famous ipod click wheel is still as reliable as the day it was bought. All the buttons you need for a music player are easily located and large enough so you don't press the wrong one by accident. The wheel only seems to be responsive to skin as when I have used it with a glove on, no response was gained and I had to take my gloves off to use it.

The mini has a battery life of 12 + hours of play depending on how often you use it which is perfect for long journeys or just for a weekend away without a recharge. The battery can be recharged easily via any USB port. I sometimes charge mine via my Xbox 360. You can listen to music whilst it charges which is a very useful feature.

4GB of HDD space is more than enough to house all of my music needs with plenty of space left over to store regular files. The extra space can be used to back up your music library should it be small enough.

The mini still works as well as ever with iTunes even with all the new iPod versions released and new versions of iTunes.

The mini comes with a USB cable and a handy clip on which is useful for sports activities. However, the headphones are not the best and broke quite easily.

Overall I can say that I hope my mini never brakes as it is perfect for my music needs.

Summary: If all you need is a basic mp3 player, than this will suit you fine.
