Apple iPod mini 4 GB
Advantages: Great for a first iPod
Disadvantages: Battery life very poor, now hideously outdated
Back in 2005, this was the first iPod I got. At the time it was amazing, I thought I'd never fill it with the claimed 1000 song capacity, so got this rather than the full sized iPod.
Compared to the big iPod of the time, it was much smaller, but these days it's thicker than the original iPad, and dwarfs an iPhone. So it takes up a lot of pocket space, but humans of 2005 didn't worry about that.
The Apple headphones at the time were the best I'd ever owned, but again, looking back they were awful. Of course, sound quality depended on the source file. Stuff ripped from CDs was good, poor quality mp3s from various websites, not so good.
4GB was touted by Apple as 1000 songs back then. I thought I would never find that many songs to fill it with, but I was wrong. Plus I actually filled it with just 500 songs; this was around the time I got into classic rock, and 9 minute or longer songs was the norm. I guess that's why Apple no longer show how many songs a product can hold in anything other than the small print, where it's all approximate.
The one major advantage of the iPod has always been how easy it is to use. I use this phrase quite a lot, but I'll do it again; even my nan could use it without any assistance, and she still has a CRT TV in her living room in 2012, so as you can imagine, is not technologically minded. But this simple yet effective interface is why the iPod has become the most popular music player in the world.
It was beautifully made, like all Apple products, but nowadays it feels too chunky in the hand, and the screen scratched too easily. It had a "my first iPod" feel about it, but by no means was that a bad thing.
I remember it taking a long time to transfer music across, but that was probably more down to the computer than the iPod.
There was one major flaw with the iPod mini, and that was the battery life. God only knows what they made them from, but after a few months I'd gone from the hours and hours of battery life claimed, to only just surviving a flight to Malaga, and by the end of it's life, I was getting half an hour maximum. Thankfully, battery tech has moved on in the last 7 years.
All in all then, not a bad effort, just a shame the batteries weren't made to last.
Summary: Could be a good eBay bargain if your young kids want iPods, just make sure the battery is replaced.
