Advantages: small, lightweight, long battery life

Disadvantages: itunes, headphones

I purchased an ipod nano for my dad in Christmas 2008. The smaller memory compared to the majority of apple ipods has not been a problem and the ipod still holds enough music for the everyday music listener. The ability to create specific playlists in itunes and choose which to put on the ipod makes it easier to switch the music collection available. He was amazed by the sound quality and this allows lower quality songs (which take less space in the limited memory) to be used and still produce a higher quality sound. The video playback is great for taking movies on holiday especially for on plane journeys, though the ipod's screen is, in my opinion, rather small for watching videos. The small screen size is a small price to pay in return for the small and light ipod which fits easily into a pocket. The ipod supports many features including games which are good for travelling and new games can be downloaded from the itunes store. The battery is long lasting with approximately 20 hours of music listening though runs down faster with videos.
The only real disadvantage is not the ipod itself but itunes, the software is unnecessarily complex and limits the types of files which can be put onto the ipod. This is especially annoying with movies as the ability to only use mp4 files means DVDs cannot be directly imported into itunes and onto the ipod.
Another problem arises from the headphones provided, although the quality of the sound is excellent the headphones do break over time, though so far he has not required new ones. Personally I have an ipod classic and have had it for 2 years now I am on my third set of headphones which are rather overpriced if you wish to replace them with the same apple product.

Summary: brilliant ipod for the casual music listener
