Apple iPod nano (3G) 4 GB
Advantages: Pocket size, touch wheel, good quality
Disadvantages: Touch sensitivity, easily scraped
Over two or three years ago, this was my first Apple product, from then my collection has grown rapidly. I can remember being extremely excited to receive and own one.
DESIGN AND DISPLAY
This generation of the iPod Nano, is in my opinion, one of the more aesthetically pleasing models of the Nano line-up, even compared to the latest, more technologically advanced models.
The iPod fits comfortably into the palm of your hand, but is fitted with one of the 30 pin dock connectors, and a headphone jack. I have the silver model which looks excellent contrasted with the beautiful; albeit easily scratched, metal reverse.
As opposed to the more standard and common placed feature of buttons going left and right to navigate through menus in other MP3/4 players, this iPod has what apple call a click/scroll wheel. You simply move your hand in a circular motion around the touch sensitive wheel to negotiate through the menus.
The iPod 4GB holds over a thousand of songs, as well as video clips and podcasts which can be downloaded from the Apple Website. The Music player section of the iPod is stunning, with the cover flow, which is replicated on your iTunes home screen. All your music can be arranged and displayed using the official album artwork from each music download. If for some reason, no artwork is available, say for example, you import from a CD, or download from a different website to iTunes; you will get a bog standard music note as the album artwork. However you can easily add images or personal customised artwork to each album using iTunes on your computer.
It is technically possible to watch Films and videos, although I'm not sure I would like to watch a full 120 minute, feature length film in the palm of my hand, on a screen just an inch or two inches wide!
The iPod also has a games section automatically loaded, two of my favourites were the well-known Klondike and the Apple quiz. The quiz is loaded with lots of different questions from a diverse range of categories, and of varying levels of difficulty.
The battery life is, according to apple 24 hours of music play, but I actually find you get more than a day's worth. Often, a full charge would last me a few days of moderate music listening!
I mentioned earlier that the back of the iPod is very easily scratched, and to this end I would recommend using a screen protector, combined with a case for the reverse of the unit.
The other problem, which is only a slight niggle, is that the touch wheel is quite erratic. Sometimes a particular sensitivity mode will appear over sensitive, and it is hard to move it at an appropriate pace. Other times the same mode will be slow and you are moving your hand a lot!
But all in all, this is an excellent iPod, particularly for those who need a small product which fits into your pocket, perhaps if going to the gym. It is also very suitable for younger children, who perhaps have a smaller music library. I recommend this product.
