Advantages: UI, Battery, Features

Disadvantages: Software

Having previously owned a Sony Walkman (the old style with the horrible DRM issues) I knew what to expect from the software (iTunes) that accompanies the iPod Nano.

I knew what to expect, but I bought one anyway. The reason for this is simple... it's a beautiful piece of kit. The screen, the casing, the colour (black, always), and the easy to use UI make this a truly wonderful player to own.

Sure, iTunes is more difficult than a 2 year old, but it's a small price to pay. Like Sony's software before it, it's harder to achieve what you want compared to the Drag and Drop method of other players, but let's be honest: for the price, you can't do any better.

Battery life is awesome (if it wasn't for the constant charge whilst transferring music, I wouldn't have to charge it more than once a week)

The UI is sublime. It's customisable, allowing you to remove options from the menus if you don't use them. Personally, I never listen to podcasts or watch videos... so those options aren't displayed on my Nano.

The sound quality, too, is great. I read about the Cowon S9 being the best thing since sliced bread (or whatever the musical equivalent of that is), but who can actually tell the difference between equaliser settings on two players at the same time? At the end of the day, for the average punter, the iPod Nano has great sound. Not once have I had to read the screen to discover what I was listening to.

I don't like to summarise... just read above. Then buy one of these.

Summary: Always a nice experience with iPods.
