Apple iPod nano (3G) 8 GB
Advantages: Easy to use, Cheap to buy now, Good build quality, Nice size, Lightweight
Disadvantages: Some software bugs, Back cover easily scratched, Bad placement of USB & Earphone socket
I have owned the Apple iPod Nano, third generation, 8GB for the last 2 years and have loved using it.
Previous to this I owned an iPod Mini, which was great but after the battery died on it I invested in a iPod nano, third generation, 8GB. I was a bit dissapointed when I first got the iPod as it came in a small plastic case with just the USB cable, headphones and small instruction manual. Fortunately I already had iTunes installed and had access to the Internet or else I am not sure how you would obtain the iTunes installation file.
The Nano 3G is a brilliant size - very small and very very thin meaning I can take it the gym without the worry it will weigh my pockets down. The nano 3G is capable of playing back videos however I have never tried this as I only use my iPod to listen to music.
The screen quality on the nano is very good quality and can easily be read in sunlight.
The nano is very easy to use and is pretty much the same user interface as previous and future generations. This version of the nano has a coverflow option where you can flick through pictures of album covers to find the songs/artist you want to listen to, this looks good but I preferred selecting the songs from playlists as this was more steady and there were no worries of flicking past your desired album by mistake.
The nano when I first got it had a great battery life and felt like I hardly ever had to charge it. I would recommend lowering the brightness of the screen to get the best from the battery life. Personally I have the brightness on about 70%, which is more than enough.
There are some really useful features packed into the nano including volume limit whereby you can set the maximum volume to ensure you are not damaging your ears. Also there is a feature that allows you to set all songs to be the same volume, as I used to have some tracks that were much louder than others when on the same volume level.
I have had some difficulties in using my iPod nano 3G - there are a number of reports of people having problems when connecting their iPod nano to a computer via USB - the iPod freezes, resulting in the user having to reset the iPod, this occurs even with the lastest software. Also the USB cable inserts right next to the earphone jack meaning everytime you want to unplug the USB cable you have to unplug the earphones to get to it, this is only a little annoyance though. Also the back cover is made out of metal is like a mirror so is easily scratched, if you want to keep your nano in 'like new' condition I would recommend purchasing a cover. The only other thing I was a bit let down by was the range of colours that you can buy this specific nano in. The more recent models are the colours of a rainbow however this nano only comes in pastel colours.
After 2 years of regular use my iPod Nano 3G is on its last legs - the hold switch has broken and the battery lasts 3 hours tops. This is much similar to my previous iPod, which also lasted approx 2 years.
Overall I would definately recommend getting this iPod nano however if you have the extra cash I would advise to get a newer generation as a few of the bugs/problems may be fixed.
Summary: Great version of the nano however some things let it down.
