Advantages: Revolutionary. Small.

Disadvantages: Very easily scratched, tiny screen.

The original iPod nano was a bit of a breakthrough for a couple of reasons. It was the smallest iPod ever made, at least the smallest with a screen and click wheel.
The screen was actually surprisingly clear, allowing syncing of phones from your iTunes library with incredible ease you could just about make out details on them, it wasn't much but it was at least as good as most mobile phone screens at the time, and it really didn't take much space up on the flash memory, as 2gb isn't really a lot for just audio let alone photos too.

The audio quality of the player was quite impressive too, it sounds good through a set of decent headphones, though as normal, avoid Apple's self supplied headphones as they are frankly cheap and cheerful (and fall out of my ears!). The syncing process is simplicity itself, few boxes to tick in iTunes and it does it all from there through the included USB cable.

The only real two complaints are ones that anyone who's owned one of these will sympathise with. The first being the lack of a mains adapter, a minor thing but definitely a niggle, this can be worked around with a separate purchase.

The second is the screen is made out of something with the same scratch resistance as a ball of putty and a brick of butter. It attracted scratches by looking at it, in later runs Apple included a slip case as a way of protecting the screen but really, it did very little. Thankfully this fault is something that was corrected with the next hardware revising, but sadly for owners of this particular model, it was too little, too late.

Summary: A budget buy, but be prepared for scratched screens.
