Apple iPod Shuffle 2GB
When I was offered an iPod shuffle, I decided it was time to join the MP3 set. I have stubbornly stuck to portable CD players for my on the move listening due to better sound quality from Cd's, but the iPod would certainly by less cumbersome for times when I did not want to be carrying much around. Also, increasingly, I was downloading music on-line, so an iPod storage facility/player was an ideal solution.
I have to admit I bought mine used for just £12.00 which I considered a good price and seemed an ideal way to test the water, so to speak. This nifty little device is certainly considerably smaller than a CD player however small and light!
Approximate dimensions are 8cm L x 4cm W & 8mm depth.
Weight is negligible too as they are so light.
Controls are basic. On one side there is just a rubber enclosed plastic button with silver arrows for play; pause; forward; backwards, you just apply pressure with your thumb nail for which feature you require. The outer rubber circle allows the user to change the volume. The other side has the on/off switch and the shuffle on or off is incorporated here. The USB point is situated at the bottom and a section is removed to use it, like a lid on a memory stick really only more stylish.
The battery lasts slightly longer than that on my CD player and I guess I am getting about 6-8 hours use per overnight charge. Charging is simple and straightforward.
The iPod has a battery light, so it is easy to tell when it is due for charging, but otherwise there is not the big display screen that many newer devices have.
Given more choice I might have chosen a Sony MP3 player, but I know to many people Apple are the leaders and the best. I certainly have no reason to dispute that. One of my cars is a convertible, so I don't leave anything of value in there and certainly would not be leaving my treasured CD's in that car, so the iPod has come into its own as a music storage system to plug into that car, as well as to pop into a pocket when I am gardening and have had enough of the peace and quiet.
The iPod seems durable and well built. I have dropped it both getting out of the afore mentioned car and when mucking out the duck house. It does seem to take whatever I throw at it.
I find the sound quality ok, but I do tend to listen in with basic in ear headphones rather than decent ones, there is a little distortion and lack of clarity sometimes, but I find that common with any downloaded music and I have not needed to copy any of my CD collection onto the iPod as yet.
Downloading is easy and I have done so both directly from Apple and from my computer hard drive. The USB is easy and straightforward to use and the music copied from the PC so fast I was not certain it had done so until I checked!
Downloading direct obviously does take a little bit longer and so far I have only done so with three items.
In conclusion I am very pleased with the iPod and am so very pleased I bought it. I am however, delighted that I listened to my technical minded friends and bought a newer portable CD player for most of my listening as the quality is still superior.
For a small light portable device though it ticks all the boxes and is ideal for running, the gym, on the train and any time an unobtrusive device is required for your listening pleasure.
4/5 Because I do believe the sound quality is indeed better using a CD device.
Where from: Available used and NOS from outlets such as eBay and Amazon at varying prices plus p&p if applicable. If you see one - buy it! Apple now sell the smaller square device from about £35.00.
Summary: An excellent device - I can see why they have such a large fanbase!
