Advantages: transportable, easy to use, simple
Disadvantages: earphones
I bought the I-pod shuffle (in purple - they were out of pink!) last year on a whim at Selfridges and i have to say I have been impressed so far.
What's not to like? The shuffle is compact and simple to use - ideal for those of us who like a low-tech way to listen to music on the move. The clip at the back eaily attached to your belt or jacket and the controls are easy to use, you can switch between tracks at the touch of a button either in order or via the use of a shuffle feature on the base of the unit. You can pause and play, switch the volume up and down and that's about it.
The shuffle charges via a little dock which logs into i-tunes in the same way as other i-pods you can then buy and load up tumes as you like.
I love the shuffle for its compact nature, I can listen to it at work through ear phones or by plugging in a speaker and it is great to always have music at my fingertips. The only downside is the earphones, if you have little ear canals 9like me!) the i-pod earphones don't fit in and if you can wedge them in are unbearably painful to wear for longer than a few minutes. The lack of anywhere to store earphones on the shuffle means that they tend to get tangled up easily if you put it in your bag.
That said, I do live the shuffle, the i-pod with its screen and other features just confuses me. I just want to listen to music and this is designed perfectly for that.
Summary: Great low-tech solution for music on the go
