Advantages: Size, clip, good looks
Disadvantages: Headphones, track selection ease.
I bought the Ipod shuffle to use whilst out running or in the gym. I chose it mainly because of it's size, and the fact that it can be clipped onto your clothing.
I have found that when worn clipped onto a lightweight t-shirt or an open jacket, the weight of the Ipod can cause the fabric of my clothing to fold over or flap open, which can be extremely irritating whilst running. However, having said this, I find it less cumbersome than running with a larger device in my pocket or strapped to my arm.
The second problem I've found is that often when I run outside, the headphones can slip out of my ears.
Although the device holds a reasonable amount of music (I think it's about 400 tracks), the fact that you can only listen to it in the order you filled it or in a totally random order can be a bit frustrating. It's fairly easy to add music using I tunes, so I've been putting less music on it and changing my playlist frequently to get over the problem of quickly finding the tracks I want.
I've found that the volume doesn't really go high enough to drown out the background noise in the gym, although it's fine outside.
Overall, I've found the Ipod shuffle be satisfactory to use when exercising, but would not use it for any other purpose. I do intend to buy some new headphones though.
Summary: Good for running but nothing else
