Apple iPod shuffle (2G) 2 GB
Advantages: Small, light and durable
Disadvantages: Docking station isn't universal connection, no screen
When it comes to music I am definitely not a fanatic. I don't have lots of music that I listen to and I usually only have it to pass times of extreme boredom or quietness.
My parents bought my iPod shuffle many Christmases ago. 2nd Generation so gives you an idea of how old it is. The fact that I still own this product and it is still in full working order is a testament in itself of how good this little product is. Before I owned this device I was still stuck in the realm of CD Players.
What I find really interesting is that the latest iPod Shuffle (4th Generation) currently uses the same design as this iPod shuffle. Clearly Apple saw this as the most ideal design for these devices as they didn't stick with the slim 3rd Generation design.
This little music player is as simple as you can get in terms of design. All the buttons that you require are included and clearly marked. Nothing more, nothing less. Also comes with an LED which alerts the user to the remaining battery life. Ensuring the user has ample notice to be able to have uninterrupted music. The 3.5mm port doubles as a headphone slot and also for the docking station to charge the device and transfer data (more on this later). It is made of aluminium making it extremely lightweight but also durable. Its small size means that it can be kept almost anywhere and the handy clip allow it to be attached to something as simple as a belt loop. The clip is extremely firm and has never had it come off when attached to a belt loop. Dare I say the belt loop would probably have to break first. A final design note is that this device has no screen; therefore the user has no way to know which song they are listening to. Potentially extremely annoying if you can't remember and someone asks. However, after the amount of times I have dropped it I'm glad it has no screen. It would be in smithereens by now.
Sadly I can't comment much on the price at its time of purchase as it was a gift but certainly much cheaper than a complete iPod.
This is perhaps the biggest let down of this shuffle. The docking station uses a 3.5mm jack to connect to the shuffle, with a USB to connect to the computer. Therefore in order to charge the device or transfer music you had to have this unique cable with you. This would be much better if a universal cable such as a USB to mini USB was able to be used for these functions.
I found that the 2GB was more than suitable for my needs but this is really down to user preference. Will you really use all that 40GB storage space that you're paying for? Or is it wiser to save some money and compromise.
Great device, considering it's made by Apple and I usually wouldn't go near their products. But their iPod shuffle is one product I can't fault and if I ever need to replace it I will most likely buy an Apple iPod Shuffle
Summary: Great for music on the go without breaking the bank
