Apple iPod touch 16 GB
Advantages: Large touch screen, downloadable apps, speaker and headphone functions.
Disadvantages: Can get easily scratched unless you have a cover for it.
It has a slim, lightweight design with the sleek black front and the shiny metal back, the typical aesthetic for most iPods. It works well as it is simple and visually attractive to the consumer. The screen has grown in size since the first variation of the iPod (it is now 3.5in diagonally) and the bulkiness and weight has been reduced to make it easier to fit in your pocket or handbag. Only three buttons are visible on the outer surface: the Power button on top of the iPod, the volume control on the left hand side and the Select button on the front, all cleverly blended into the overall design.
To unlock the iPod touch, press the Select button and then drag your finger or thumb across the bottom of the screen where instructed. The visual display that greets you is pretty breathtaking for something so small. The graphics of the icons are all clear and about fingerprint size. They are set out in a 4x4 grid on the screen and in a methodological order for use. With the applications, you are able to go online through the Wi-Fi enabled technology, visit the Apple App store and download applications to your iPod. There is a wide range, from a chat app (similar to MSN but known as E-Buddy) to many different games that can be played interactively through the touch screen and by tilting the iPod a certain way. Of course the download speed of the apps entirely depends upon the Wireless Internet Connection you are using at the time. And of course it is amazing that it can all be done with the touch screen function as opposed to actual buttons.
The iPod touch doesn't just allow you to listen to music through headphones, you are actually able to remove the headphones from their port and listen to the music of your choice through a hidden speaker. The sound quality isn't the best but is pretty amazing for the fact that it comes out of the headphone area. It is extremely handy if you want to play music for someone else to hear. The iPod touch also gives you the ability to play videos from both YouTube (there is already an icon for that on your screen) and ones that you have downloaded yourself from your computer.
I have to say that the battery life on the iPod touch is one of the best I have seen, it can last for days at a time without it even being turned off. Mine only needs charging about once every week, sometimes not even that often. Charging it is much just the same as one of the original iPods, the same cable to your computer (or plug, if you have one that goes in the wall) and then the other end goes in the bottom of the iPod.
The 16gb version has enough space for approximately 4,000 songs and between 10 and 40 hours of video. It has up to about 30 hours of music playback time and about 6 hours of video playback time (when the iPod is fully charged). They actually don't do the 16gb version in the new design (with voice control features) so you can choose from the 8gb, 32gb and 64gb versions instead.
iTunes is easy enough to get from the website and can be downloaded in both 32bit and 64bit variations, depending on what your computer supports. The programme is extremely responsive and picks up straight away when you have attached your iPod to the computer, allowing you to transfer your music and videos across to your iPod. It has a relatively fast transfer rate which obviously changes dependant upon how many songs/videos you are putting on your iPod.
Summary: A gateway product for bigger and better things from Apple.
