Advantages: Touch interface, internet capabilities, the AppStore
Disadvantages: Apple headphones (I would recommend replacing them)
This is far, far more than an MP3 player. It is an internet communications device, a mapping system, a mail client, a YouTube player, a notepad, and now, with the App Store, just about anything you can think of!
This product is good enough as an MP3 player, the iPod interface is very easy to use, and the best offered by any player on the market. Its widescreen capabilities make it a pleasure to watch films on the 3.5 inch display.
The multi-touch interface is simply outstanding- when you first use the safari application you will be amazed at how easy it is to zoom and type onto pages. Pictures can be 'pinched' into in an oddly natural way, giving you power over the pages.
Google maps is extremely well made; with directions and traffic built in, it is very easy to see how long it will take to get from A to B.
The mail client is fully featured, you can send links, your pictures, and your location to anyone in your contacts (which sync with your computer). With push notifications, you can receive most internet mail account emails instantly!
YouTube is highly addictive and very enjoyable to use on the iPod, almost every video on YouTube is available right in your hand over a Wi-Fi signal.
The App Store is unmatched is its variety and ease of use. 'Apps' of all kinds can be downloaded to your iPod in a matter of seconds: anything from a twitter application to a game of Texas Hold'em! You will wonder how you did without the extensive range of applications available at your fingers.
Some people have criticised the battery life of the iPod- I do not see where they are coming from. The iPod can remain in standby mode for days and I have never had a problem from playing too much music.
Overall, this device is a piece of technological history, a truly great product well worth the price.
Summary: Well worth any price, an utterly fantastic piece of engineering.

- 08/05/09 I'm always surprised that Apple gets criticised for battery life - my iPod lasts ages and I use it loads. |
