Advantages: Incredible intuitive controls, superb applications, classy product
Disadvantages: Smudgy screen, high pricetag
Apple's iPod Touch was a brave and daring step forward for the portable music player industry- so much more than just an mp3 player, it combined the idea of playing videos and showing photo slideshows previous generations had- and expanded it even further to become a complete multimedia device. Its important to state that the iPod Touch is essentially the iPhone- minus the phone option. This means you still have essentially all other features of the iPhone: safari web browser, iTunes wifi music store, the app store, mail function, notes et all.
The web browser is very effective, making good use of the ipod's touch screen functions, and is generally very stable-it has closed the odd time on me. The app store and the iTunes wifi music store bothe require a wifi connection, and are both very easy to use. In my opinion, the greatest thing about the iPod Touch is the touch screen controls. In every application, the touch screen functions prove both extemely effective and intuitive. By pinching fingers and spreading them on screen, you can zoom in on photos, a certain part of the web page, etc. A tap with two fingers (or indeed by reversing your actions) will zoom back out again. The accelerometer proves useful also- by turning the iPod ninety degrees so the screen is horizontal, it brings to to cover flow in music, or rotates a web page so it better fits the screen. There are a myriad of other inventive control schemes with with to browse your ipod, and I personally feel the touch screen is the outstanding feature of this iPod generation.
No device is perfect, however, and of course this is no exception. As brilliant as the touch screen is, this also, obviously, will bring smudges to the screen- its inevitable. This means that the screen will require a periodical clean. Another obvious drawback is the price- its an apple product, and apple products don't come cheap. However, if you can get over the occasional smudgy screen, and don't baulk at the pricetag, then this is an incredible purchase, an accessory you will take with you everywhere.
