Apple iPod touch (3G) 64 GB
Advantages: Mid capacity, look amazing, screen is responsive and sharp
Disadvantages: Back vulnerable to scratching, medium storage capacity
For a long time I refused to get the Touch, opting instead for the classic scrollwheel model. How wrong I was.
It looks great. Sleek silver back, and single button front. Yup, it's an Apple product alright!
Out the box, and connected to my MacBook, setup took about half an hour. Software updates were needed, but this is expected with older models of new gadgets.
Getting the music on was simple. One checkbox and the iPod does it all for you. There is also the option to manually manage music and videos, in case your collection is larger than the storage size, or you want to leave room for apps.
My 15Gb did take a long time to transfer, over 4 hours, but I suspect this is more to do with the limitations of USB transfer speed than anything iPod related.
The display is gorgeous, with customisable wallpaper. The touch screen is responsive, swiping and pinching gestures on photos all work well to move and zoom.
The App store is great, you can add any number of useful programs to boost your phones capabilities.
WiFi connectivity means you don't need to connect to the Mac to buy apps or music, you can download from the device and sync two ways so you never lose anything. Calendars and contacts can also be synchronised.
No camera, but who needs one, this is a music player!
As a gaming machine, the graphics for available games display well and it's powerful: there more power in this than the first iMacs that were released! The best games are not the 3D graphics based ones, as they sap battery life rather quickly.
The interface for music is simple and easy; select by artist, by album or by song. There is a search function and you can create custom playlists.
Whilst this has all the functionality of the iPhone sans the phone or sms/mms function, it is a music player and it best used for that.
64Gb is the highest storage capacity, it would be nice to see a 128Gb version as, once music is loaded, any videos can really eat up space.
Watching movies on this is great, the screen is sharp and responsive.
Overall, it does a whole load, but to get the best out of it, use it for what it was designed for: a music player.
One word of warning: buy a cash. You WILL scratch the daylights out of the silver back, and you won't be happy.
Summary: Jack of all trades, master of none. Except music, for that, it is the King
