Advantages: Brilliant piece of kit. Good for long plane journeys
Disadvantages: Not much difference between this and the old 2g one
Having sold my old second generation IPod Touch a few weeks ago I was missing it dearly. The bus journey seemed to take longer without it. As did the train. The idea was once I had got rid of the iPod touch I would buy a less expensive mp3 player. The only problem was it just wasn't the same. You can't interact with it in the same way, you can't play with it, and you can't watch videos on it, (even though I hardly ever watched video's I missed it). It's the old saying of how you don't appreciate something until it's gone.
Anyway cutting to the chase I ended up buying the new IPod Touch 3g. When I unpacked it I noticed a few differences. It was a tiny bit slimmer, (hardly noticeable though), and it was lighter.
The new third generation Touch has only 3 sizes to choose from. 8GB, 32GB and 64 GB. The 8GB can hold around 2000 songs, which still leaves lots of space for me. The 32 and 64GB models are 'upgraded' versions which feature voice control and are 'supposedly' quicker. Personally I don't think it is worth the money. But it's up to you.
After doing all the business of setting it up and what not, I had a play with it. And I honestly couldn't find much difference to my old one, except it wasn't scratched obviously. There was the odd new thing like Bluetooth. Yet this is only to connect IPod Touch to Bluetooth speakers and other Touch's. So you can't go sending your songs to your phone or PC.
It was also quite quick at opening up applications and loading maps, although it still took ages turning on (15 - 20 seconds). Speaker quality is above average but isn't the best. Same applies to sound through the headphones/earphones. Yet you don't buy an iPod for sound quality, you buy it for the things you can do with it.
The IPod Touch boasts 30 hours battery life. That is fairly accurate I suppose. Yet it is dramatically reduced by having certain things on. For instance by having Wi-Fi turned on and going on the internet web browsing, you will be lucky to get an hour's battery! Charging it up is relatively quick so that helps. I would recommend buying a plug adapter or another way of recharging it as it can be a pain having to turn the laptop on when the battery runs low. Don't worry though if the battery is low it gives you plenty of warning.
Web browsing. It is acceptable but when viewing some web pages you can end up with bits of text and images where they shouldn't be, yet most are ok. Video quality was a pleasant surprise and is actually really good for a 3.5 inch screen.
I personally can't see much difference between this and the old 2g one. But hey, it's till good and worth the money.
Summary: Want an interactive MP3/MP4 player. Why not give it a go?
