Apple iPod touch (3G) 8 GB
Advantages: Light, easy to use, large clear screen, lots of features
Disadvantages: Battery life could be better, can be expensive (but is worth it)
I bought my husband an iPod Touch for his birthday in July 2009 - he had previously had a 3rd Gen Nano, and was constantly raving about how he wanted to get a Touch, so I treated him to one!
The Touch is a wonderful piece of technology - it's touch screen is easy to navigate and not as overly-sensitive as I would have expected it to be. In fact at the moment, I use the Touch more as I've become quite hooked on it! The screen is large and immensely clear - watching videos and using apps such as iPlayer are wonderful due to the clarity of the screen.
It has the ability to connect to Wi-Fi internet, where available, and I use this feature a lot at home, when I want to browse Twitter or quickly check my emails without the hassle of having to load up my laptop. The internet is very easy to set up on it, and can be set to automatically connect to your chosen wireless connection. I don't know how easy it would be to connect to wi-fi in the 'hotspots' when out and about though, as I have not tried to do this.
The Apps that you can get for the Touch are endless, and good fun. My husband has a number of games on it, including the recent Grand Theft Auto release, and a Casino game - both are fun to mess around with when on the go, particularly if you've a long journey ahead of you!
We've got the 8GB version, which would be adequate for my limited music collection, but is unfortunately not adequate for my husband's collection. Sadly at the time, I could only afford the 8GB version, as at £165 this was already beyond my budget!! It is a good MP3 player for the cost though, when you take into consideration what else it is capable of.
The sound quality from the iPod touch is really quite good - obviously this can depend on the quality/expense of your headphones though. I use the Skull headphones, and these really do it justice in terms of sound quality. I don't rate the included Apple headphones though - these seem a little cheap and cheerful, but are a good starter until you get chance to upgrade them.
It is a reliable little machine, which we've never had a problem with. It's easy to use, and has a reasonably good battery life (more so, if you're just using the music player). It hooks up to your PC/laptop via USB cable to charge, and although may seem to charge relatively quickly, can take up-to five hours for a 'full' charge.
Summary: Reliable, good quality mp3 player from Apple.
