Apple iPod touch (3G) 8 GB
Advantages: It's a iPod !!!! Great screen resolution, great touch screen interface, a great piece of kit !
Disadvantages: Price can be offputting to some people, being locked into iTunes pretty much
I received my 2nd generation iPod Touch 8GB about 2 months ago after my original iPod classic I had had for 6 years decided to stop working, I weighed up different MP3 players such as the Zune etc but in the end brand snobbery took over and I decided to stump up the cash for the iPod touch, plus I wanted most of the features of an iPhone without having to pay the extortionate fees they charge you for the privelige of having a iPhone on contract.
Once taking the iPod out of the packaging i'm instantly indicated to connect it to my computer, if you don't have a version of iTunes installed you'll have to install it to your computer as its the only software an iPod will sync up with, and thats probably for the best as in my opinion iTunes it the finest piece of music / file management software out there, outside of professional grade business use.
Once I had finished the process of my iPod syncing with my computer I began to load songs / videos / apps onto the device, and this is really where it comes into its own, some of the apps available for the device are pure genius, with the only downside being that most of the really useful ones require an internet connection and whilst the iPod touch is Wi-Fi its not 3G like an iPhone so you can't just pick up internet anywhere, you have to be within reach of a Wi-Fi connection, but once you are some of the apps are very addictive and some are supremely useful as well.
The quality of the screen and the touch screen interface struck me as very high as well, i'm using a Samsung Mobile phone right now and while it is touch screen and I thought it was a fine piece of kit, next to the iPod the touch screen interface on my phone is clunky, hard to use and inaccurate, the interface for the iPod is wonderful, along with the screen resolution which is nice and bright and clear, so once you load movies / videos onto your phone you'll be able to watch TV shows / Movies while on the go and still get great picture quality
My only criticism of the iPhone is that Apple has done a really good job of locking the device so you can only upload apps / videos from the iTunes site, unless you either Jailbreak ( Crack ) the device to allow 3rd party apps to be run ( something that will invalidate your warranty should something go wrong with the device ) and you'll need quite a bit of computer skill to be able to learn to convert and upload regular videos that may be stored on your computer into the format that will allow you to play them on your device ( it took me days of trial and error before I got it right !!, however I now have 3 movies on my iPod that I didn't have to pay for through iTunes !! )
So overall in my opinion if you're looking for a top notch MP3 player and a top notch media device then I don't believe you'll be able to find a better device for the money !!
Summary: One of the best devices of the last 10 years
