Apple iPod touch (3G) 8 GB
Advantages: Perfect screen for internet and movies, Good battery life, Apps, Reliable, Easy to use
Disadvantages: Price for capacity, Fragile, Reduced battery when using Wi-Fi, No camera
So before I took the dive and actually purchased an iPhone I had the next best, apple, thing...the iPod touch. It can do almost everything that the iPhone can but without the hefty price tag and the monthly payments. It's just missing the phone, 3G and the camera, but for apps, videos, Wi-Fi internet and music it is the next best thing. I love my music and am a sound engineer myself so a good quality bit of kit is very important to me, this is that good quality bit of kit.
With its LARGE TOUCH SCREEN the iPod touch is a very pleasurable MP3 player to use, a more than fair compromise for it's size. It's great for searching and browsing your music library (assuming you have all your artwork) and for watching videos...It's also great for internet surfing and social networking with its Wi-Fi connection. Apple are right when they say "You already know how to use it" it's really simple and looks great.
The APP LIBRARY is the same as that on the iPhone with an app for almost anything. The only thing I found with this model (8GB) is you soon fill up the space whilst trying out the apps...leaving not a lot of space for music, my solution is regularly deciding what albums you are ACTUALLY going to listen to and just having those on the device.
Now to the geeky SOUND QUALITY bit. As you may imagine in my profession I have loads of different pairs of headphones ranging from high end studio quality to usual everyday ones...like those that come with the device. With this review in mind I have tried all of them with the iPod touch to get an idea of the sound quality compared to other devices. If you don't mess around with any of the EQ settings the sound quality is very good and the volume is better than that of the iPod classic...you can also crank it up without any type of sound distortion.
RELIABILITY is my final port of call...I have had this device for well over a year now and have taken it travelling with me without as much as a crash, it is still running the same as when I too it from the neat Apple box. BATTERY LIFE is in fact better than I expected from a device with such a large touch screen, I would suggest turning the brightness down when just browsing your music to seriously increase the battery's life.
IN SUMMARY the iPod Touch 8GB is a brilliant device for those that don't want to have all of there music with them at all times and want access toy Apple's extensive Apps on a fairly low cost device. I imagine it to be more fragile than some of its competitors but a case makes short work of that. Battery life is surprisingly good as is sound quality. You obviously get the brilliant built quality you expect from Apple.
Summary: Everything iPhone without the phone or the camera
