Apple iPod touch (3G) 8 GB

Apple iPod touch (3G) 8 GB
Advantages: Versitility, Music, Video, Internet, camera, apps.
Disadvantages: iTunes sucks. Apple store is (allegedly) the spawn of the devil.
Fish or fowl?
The iPod touch is a hybrid device. It can be used for music, it can be used for films. It can avail itself of a plethora of applications, both free and chargeable. There is no question regarding its versatility. The real question is, how well does it do each of these?
Turn up the music, turn it up loud - 7/10
There is space for a huge amount of tracks on your iPod, even if you've only an older 8GB device. The touch screen can be locked to prevent accidental switching while running or working out. The quality of the music is not that great, even through decent headphones.
The bottom line is, if you are looking purely for a music player you'll get a better sound from devices half this price.
If you have an apple device, you will be plugging it in to a laptop or desktop in order to access the dark side. iTunes. A necessary, if great evil. But take heart, you never ever have to sign up to the apple store to be able to put music on your iPod.
You can take music in other formats already on your machine, point iTunes at them and it will populate its library with apple format versions on those songs. From here, you can create playlists for every occasion.
Switching by genre, artist, album and track is simple. The screen is fairly responsive and buying a rubber cover for it so that it remains so is a must.
Cine, Ma! - 5/10
Again, although you can buy titles through the Apple store, many DVDs now come with digital editions which you can slap onto your iPod easily enough. The quality is very impressive, though sitting through an entire film (by yourself) focused on that small screen will probably leave you reaching for the anadin.
If you do like and use this aspect, you'll soon find yourself wishing you'd opted for at least 32GB. You can save space by only keeping limited numbers on the device, leaving the rest on your PC, but it can be a fiddle.
Viewing a film is where an iPod makes little sense, and an iPad much more.
Appy face. 8/10
Here's where the iPod will sell itself for many. There really is an app for just about everything. Think Angry Birds as a good example of a premium (paid for) app. There are thousands of others available from scrollable maps of the underground, an electronic spirit level for putting up shelves (and settling arguments!) to various shooters and basic RPGs and driving games and this and that.
I personally don't use apps much. I have a handful, and that's it. For me it is primarily a music device, particularly on long business trips where I can just plug it into my car and listen. I also use the excellent youtube and general internet browser functions. Why did I buy it, considering this? I didn't. I won it.
Designed for life 8/10
Ergonomically, the iPod touch sits in the palm of your hand nicely. Because you will leave finger prints all over the nice, shiny case it is best to buy the rubber cover previously mentioned. The screen will need cleaning from time to time, and if you do take it to the gym or similar, make sure your pockets are deep ones. You don't want it falling out.
The power off button (which consists of holding down the lock button) can be a pain to engage, but that's the only real design flaw. Battery life is not great if you are watching films or browsing, but recharging is simple enough.
I've not mentioned the camera, because I don't use it. There are video capabilities I've also yet to investigate. But even when writing this review, I've piqued my own curiosity and will give it a go later. Best of all, you can buy an 8GB iPod touch for as little as £110 brand new.
Summary: Technically brilliant, now much more affordable than at launch.
