Advantages: lots of apps
Disadvantages: no mains charger supplied
The 4th Generation iPod Touch has a beautiful, high quality display - much better than my previous 3G iPod. It also has a location pinpointing system - not quite GPS but allows the use of a whole new range of apps, particularly sports apps, which enable you to really monitor and measure your exercise levels - in a fun way! Apple also offers the 'Find My iPhone' app free now (this used to require a yearly MobileMe subscription), so once this is set up if you misplace or lose your iPod Touch you can locate it, and even remotely lock it or wipe its data.
There are two cameras: one front facing for video chat, and one rear facing for taking snapshots, and you can also record videos.
With a 32GB capacity, there's plenty of space for games, music, pictures, videos, books (either using iBooks or the Kindle app), and - of course - apps, and with so many apps to choose from this is a plus!
Bad PointsThe back of the unit gets scratched very easily; if this is likely to bother you you will need a case of some type for it - I have mine in a silicone case. This case also makes the iPod a little bit more bulky, and less likely to slip out of my hand!
No mains charger is supplied - you would think that for the price it would be included. Also, the battery life is a lot shorter than Apple claims (and the use of the location pinpointing system quickly drains it) - making a mains or car charger more of a must, as you might not always be near a computer to charge it using the USB lead.
Standard Apple headphones are provided, and they don't have any remote controls (like volume control), and theyare not 'in-ear', so never seem to stay in my ears.
When I had my 1st Generation iPod an Apple iTunes account could be opened just by using iTunes gift vouchers, however opening an Apple account now requires an email address and a current valid credit card. Apple also cheekily checks that the credit card is validated every so often. This process led to the cancellation and reissuing of one of my credit cards as the validation process- however it is performed - was taken to be fraudulent activity on my account so cards got cancelled and new cards were issued. (At least this happened AFTER the Christmas shopping was done!)
Summary: all in all its a great device.
