Advantages: Amazing well made Apple product
Disadvantages: Not quite an iPhone, not quite an iPod
An incredible device, nothing less than what you would expect from Apples second-to-non build quality and amazingly high standards.
The functionality when using the device itself is in line with all other handheld Apple products - menus flow with no lag, the screen is brilliantly vibrant and amazing to look at, and it just feels fun. If you have never used a 4th generation Apple product before, be prepared to be amazed at just how quick, smooth and just fun using it is. If you have used Apple products before, its a noticeably notch up - the Retina display alone will leave you marveling.
The Touch is usually billed as an MP3 player - its much more than that. Playing MP3s it can do, and very well - but this pocket device is packed with functionally galore. As it plays video very, very well, its a device to finally make mobile video viewing an REALLY enjoyable experience. Watching a movie on a Touch was the first time I realized watching video on the go was more than just a fad and throwaway experience. Add the video and music capability to the camera and gaming functionality and you really have a device that you will get a lot of use from.
Under the hood, its a similar story. The battery life is above average, and with 32g of storage it is more than the average user will be happy with. Using it for music and its ample. Using it for video - its ample - using it for a bit of both, its ample. As I mentioned - its powerful. Heaps of tech are crammed into this, and it shows when using it - switching from menu to menu is lightening fast.
However, there is a downside. This product sits between two other products - taking some elements from both but not quite being the sum of its parts.
Many people see the Touch as an iPhone you can't make calls on, or a iPod with less storage. Both of these things are true. If you want a more fuller device, with more on-the-go functionality - the iPhone beats the Touch hands down - its an all in one product. If you want a powerful MP3 player with vast, not ample storage - the iPod wins hands down.
Its widely regarded that a Touch is not needed if you have an iPhone, and that's true. The iPhone does what the Touch does and more. But iPhones are expensive and usually involves lengthy contracts - the Touch is cheaper and doesn't involve a contract.
I would recommend a Touch if you want the premium quality Apple offers, without splashing out for an Iphone. Its a great product that can't help but scream compromise.
Summary: Great if you don't have an iPhone or iPod but want the fun parts of both
