This is a review of the original (1G) iPod touch, please bear in mind that at the time of writing there are two newer (and cheaper...) models of this product, the 2nd and 3rd generation versions.
I bought my Touch only a couple of months before the 2G came out, offering a lighter, more battery efficient ipod with inbuilt speaker and physical volume controls. And £30 cheaper. However, it is important to note that the software is the main thing here, and the main software improvements can be accessed by all ipod touch users.
I have been delighted with my purchase from day one. The iPod Touch is revolutionary in so many ways. Take Cover Flow, for example. Or the multi-touch, pinch to zoom feature. By making multimedia interactive in a very intuitive manner, Apple has made the very experience of using the device enjoyable, rather than a means to an end (playing a certain song, etc.).
What makes it truly amazing, however, is the App Store. While traditionally devices such as MP3 players can be pidgeon-holed in terms of thier functionality - MP3s, video, radio, etc. - the App store has changed everything. Now one device can conceivably give you limitless functionality, limited only by the minds of app programmers. There are thousands of applications for literally anything you could think of, from finding restaurants and ATM machines to keeping track of your to-dos. Not to mention that the iPod Touch and iPhone have become the most popular portable gaming devices, with such gems as Super Monkey Ball and Rolando standout titles, redefining the gaming experience with their intuitive controls. I use apps for social networking (facebook), to track my expenses (ixpenseit), remember birthdays (occasions), organise my to-dos (Things), log my workouts (gymgoal), find my way around (london bus) and store all my passwords (ewallet).
This is without even mentioning the sound quality, the internet functionality - Safari with multitouch is amazing - the stunning look and feel of the device, the fact that so much thought and meticulous planning has gone into designing every aspect of the hardware and software.
Well done to Apple for a fantastic product.

Summary: Although the 1G ipod touch is an outdated model, it is still amazing
