Advantages: Easy to use, creative apps, can take it anywhere, good storage space
Disadvantages: Keyboard quite small so harder for people to get used to
For my 16th birthday I recieved an Ipod touch with 8GB capacity. I had been wanting it since they had been released. So when my parents presented me with this, I was completely in shock and couldn't wait to get all the newest music, apps and games onto this little bundle of fun.
-- Appearance of the Ipod Touch --
When you recieve your Ipod it comes in a very small box which contains everything you would need, USB Cable, Head-phones, an Ipod Dock Adapter and a quick start guide, which is a tiny little square booklet (very cute!)
There are two different colour choices which are white and black. The Ipod Touch is surprisingly thin, you would think that because of everything you can do on the Ipod and the amount of memory it has it would be much bigger. But it is only 58.9 mm wide, 111 mm in height and 7.2 mm in depth which is extremely thin. The Ipod is very light only weighing 101 grams. The screen is 3.5 inches wide when faced diagonally with a widescreen touch display, showing a 960x640 pixel resolution at 326 pixels per inch.
There are only four buttons on the entire ipod. There is one on the front which is the one you press to take you back to the home page when you need to, also you press this when your ipod is in sleep mode, for you to be able to see see the slide bar you need to unlock all the ipods functions. There is a button displayed on the top of the ipod which enables you to lock your ipod with one push, to stop any interferance whilst the device in in your pocket, handbag ect, also if you hold the button down whilst the ipod is unlocked this will bring up a power off menu, which you simply either slide the screen to turn your Ipod of or press the cancel button displayed at the bottom. This screen will also dissapear back to whatever page you were on before after roughly 30 seconds. There are also two buttons connected to each other on the left side of the Ipod, these enable you to increase or decrease the volume.
The use of the buttons and knowing which one to press in certains situations does take a little time to get used to, but once your used to it, its very easy and simple to get on with.
-- The Touch Screen --
I found the touch screen to be an absolute joy to get on with, so much easier than touch screens on phones. As my fingers are fairly small, using the keyboard was very easy and not very often did I make mistakes by pushing the wrong keys, because of this I do think this could be a bit more difficult for something with larger fingers and may tend to get a bit more fiddly and may tend to take longer to get used to. The size of the app icons on the otherhand are a perfect size and very easy to get on with.
-- All About Apps --
The ipod touch comes with 17 previously installed applications which are: Game centre, Calendar, Photos, Contacts, YouTube, Stocks, Maps, Weather, Notes, Utilities, iTunes, App Store, Settings, Music, Mail, Safari and Videos.
Quite a few of these apps do require internet access like YouTube, Maps, Weather, Mail, Safari, App Store and Came Centre.
There are also thousands of great apps that you are able to get your hands onto with WiFi access and going onto the Apps store. You can get pretty much apps for everything games, Education, Music, Social Networking, even the News and much more.
Apps are very easy to download you simply go onto the apps store and search either the catorgory of the type of apps you want or if you already know the name of the app you can also enter this into the search bar and it will find the app for you and everything related to that app. Some apps do require a small payment anything from 50p to £3. There are plenty of free apps available including demos of games and programmes.
To delete apps is very easy to do, simply hold down on the icon of the app you wish to delete until it starts to wobble, once this appears it displays an 'X' which you press and a confirmation screen showing 'Delete' or 'Cancel' will show up.
-- Music --
The music app is displayed at the bottom of the screen amoungst three other apps. When you go into the app a screen will appear, at the bottom of the screen are five icons which will display your Playlists, Artists, Songs, Albums and an icon which displays More. Whilst searching through these icons, if you currently are playing a song, in the top right hand corner is a black arrowed shaped box which states 'Now Playing' pressing this will instantly take you to the song you are currently listening too. On this display screen you will find a number of icons which rewind and foward the songs, play/pause the song, and two bars which you slide across to either, increase the volume without playing with the buttons on the side of the ipod or to quickly take you to a part of the song. If you have album artwork, this will also display as a background picture on the 'Now Playing' display screen.
As there are speakers installed directly inside of the ipod this allows you to play your music out loud with needing to use the headphones or Ipod dock station.
-- Videos --
The video app allows you to search through and watch videos whereever you are whether your at home, at work or on the train. It's fantastic! The screen may be a little small, but having a portable video player makes it so worth while! Now every occasion can become fun!
At the moment I haven't currently got any videos on my Ipod as you do need to purchase these and they can be quite costly. Also I haven't found the need to use them recently as I don't have to sit through a boring bus or train journey anymore due to passing my driving test.
-- Photos --
The photos app enables you to flick through your photos using your fingertips and keep all memorable moments with you. My hard-drive on my computer is completely jammed pack full of music, pictures ECT. So when I copied all of it over to my Ipod I was completely shocked at how little space this takes up. It's fantastic!
-- Using iTunes --
Itunes is essential for you to be able to transfere music from your computer/laptop to your Ipod. Also with the Itunes app already installed onto the Ipod this allows you when you are in range with WiFi to dowload music, videos ect without needing access to the computer which I think is extremely convienient and very clever. The instruction manual provides everything you will need to know in order to get your Ipod up and running including how to download iTunes and the steps to take to get your Ipod on its way!
-- Speakers --
I find the speakers to be fairly good, obviously there not going to be the best quality but they certainly do the job for this little 7mm in depth Ipod! I find that if you lay the Ipod facing upwards, you get the best quality of sound from the speakers.
-- Battery Life --
The Ipod touch has up to 36 hours of battery life which I think is absolutely incredible. This ipod doesn't run on double or triple A batteries, instead there is a battery contained inside the Ipod. There are various ways of charging, either plugging the USB end into a power adapter and then plugging it into a socket just like you would with a mobile phone or by plugging the USB cable into your computer. What I find great about being able to charge it through your computer, is that you don't even need your computer to be on for it to be able to charge!
-- 8 GB Memory --
You can store hundreds or songs and pictures on your Ipod touch and still have room for more. I did find once I started to download apps and games that it took up the space a lot quicker and I had to end up deleting them because of no space, but as I don't have time to play games as much anymore I don't tend to download them. If you think you would be purchasing or downloading a lot of apps, music and games then I would reccomend purchashing the 16 GB as it will allow for much more space. I find that I hardly use any of the space up on my Ipod at the moment as I only use it for music rather than pictures, videos and apps.
-- The Positives and Negatives --
There are endless postivies with this device so I will only explain the most evident ones to me. Firstly in my opinion I absolutely love the style, layout and icons on the Ipod Touch. The layout is spread out nicely with large icons which are a very good size so no matter the thickness of your fingers, its hard to get muddled up! The apps that are already pre installed and displayed I think are brillaint as they to me are the most important and the most useful. The design is very easy to follow and stands out very well. Once you have got an idea of where everything is, what buttons and icons do what, you will be away and your get used to it very quickly.
I love the ease of being able to scroll and find what music you want. It offers you ways to find music you may either not know the name of or the artist who sings it. So displaying different ways, makes life so much easier for you.
What I didn't like about the ipod touch is that I thought the keypad could be larger, as when my mum tried to use it she had great difficulty as she has thicker fingers than I do. She kept pressing the wrongs keys and got very frustrated! I also think that there could be more apps pre installed onto the Ipod, to give a more wide variety and choice of apps.
-- Price and Availability --
The Ipod Touch is widely available in Apple stores, online stores or other electrical stores such as Currys and Comet. The price does tend to vary and you can never pin point as offers are constantly displayed. The price does tend to vary on the storage amount and where you get it from but roughly the prices are:
8 GB- £165.00
The think the price is really good for the high quality you are recieving, obviously there could be some small improvements to make it more usuable but I think it is such a brilliant device!
-- Conclusion --
They may be a few slight problems with the Ipod Touch that may vary between people, but I think it's absolutely awesome! This would be such the perfect gift for anyone and any occasion! It comes everywhere with me, I couldn't imagine going back to my MP3 player now! I would definitely recommend this and I'm sure the more upgrades they tend to do on the Ipod Touch the better it will get and hopefully correct some of the problems people have came across!
Summary: Great device, would definitely recommend!
