Advantages: Good looks, Chav factor

Disadvantages: Useless proprietory player, Transferring Music and Video is pain, No FM radio, Very expensive

I am a techy guy with many years of programming experience. But when I was asked to setup new iPod 5G (30 GB version) software on the PC, I really struggled.

The iTune is one of the most useless software I have ever seen. When I started installation on PIII computer with 15 inch screen, after accepting EULA, there is no way to go to the next step. After struggling for a while, I worked out that resolution of 15 inch screen is not good enough, so I increased the resolution and then I could see "Next" button. What a useless piece of software which can not adjust to the screen size.

Then I tried to copy some thing into iPod via this useless iTune software. It is not straight forward. After trying for a while and doing multiple synch, I managed to copy 3 out of 5 movie clips on to the iPod. Not sure why it did not copy rest 2 clips, as they were all of same format.

Everything about iPod is vaugue. Nothing works as expected. There is a big dial on the middle of the iPod. You fiddle it and it will do something. If this is not you wanted, you fiddle it again and it will do something else. If you are lucky, it will do the thing you actually wanted. i.e. increase volume, change track, go back 1 level up, fast forward etc.. It will do one of the above randomly when you fiddle on the stupid dial. Which is fine for chavs.

Here are some points I dislike about iPod :
- Proprietory brick, you feel like you are renting it instead of feeling of real ownership.
- Fiddley vague interface
- Can't copy song or anything easily. You need iTune to be installed if you want to copy stuff into iPod. Lot worse than my simple mobile phone
- Can't play all the files
- No FM radio

I would personally never buy this, unless I get this free from someone.

Summary: Advertising miracle which proves that you can brand a donkey as a horse and riding it is cool
