Advantages: storage ability

Disadvantages: price

First off, let's discuss the basics - the ipod is a personal music player of epic proportions. Mine currently contains 4453 songs and a handful of music videos, and that's about 27gb, so conservative estimates would suggest this ipod can hold around 5000 songs - that's a lot of music!

In case you don't know, you have to have a computer to use an Ipod, and you have to download a program called 'itunes'. Itunes is like a virtual hi-fi, where you put all of your music (either load your CDs into it or actually buy music in their online store). On top of that, you can download free podcasts. These are basically radio shows, and they are free on itunes too. So, you plug the Ipod in, it connects to itunes, and puts everything you have on itunes onto your Ipod.

The Ipod then works as a personal stereo, the main difference being it can hold a LOT of music. The quality of the sound is amazing, crisp and faultless.

What else? The ipod can play videos and movies, has a clock and a few basic games, a currency convertor and an international clock.

The headphones that come with it aren't that good, so pick up some in ear ones (creative is a good make) to make the most of the sound quality.

The only down-side is that occasionally these will crash, and the software will mess up. A couple of times I've had to upload all the music from scratch. Because it's software rather than hardware, it's not like you can really do a lot about this - there's nothing to physically try and mend!

All in all, the 30gb Ipod is great for those who have a few thousand songs. If you've got more, you'll need a bigger one!

Apple headphones are rotten - don't know why they bother.

It's only a small point but the line "you have to have a PC" might be slightly misleading in that some people might think you mean a Windows PC and that this wouldn't work with a Mac?

I bought a pair of Sennheiser buds that really helped the sound quality. CX300s, I think they were.
