Not an ipod killer, but still good (Archos 605 WiFi 30 GB)

The Archos 605 Wifi is one of the ipod touches biggest rivals, and on the outside, it is easy to see why. 30GB of hard drive space, the ability to play all video and music formats, a web browser, the ability for games, and also buttons on top of the on board touch screen.

While these may seem like a list of fantastic features that could easily rival the ipod touch, there are quite a few faults that I must first point out. Firstly the touch screen is not multi touch enabled, so unlike the ipod touch it is not a seamless experience a requires a stylus to work. The upside is that the buttons are quick, simple and easy to use.

While the price may sound mouth watering, at just £120, Archos are actually tricking many people into buying their product. In order to access the internet, an add on must be bought, in order to play games, an add on must be bought, in order to play podcasts, an add on must be bought, the list goes on and on, and creates an infuriating situation.

The web browser itself is reasonable on the Archos. On the downside it is a bit clunky and at first very tricky to get the hang of, but it does have some advantages over rival ipod touch, firstly there is a handy copy and paste feature, then there is also a wifi g module fitted, along for long distance wifi range. But I have not come to the main advantage, flash! While it may not be used for games, the flash on the Archos means that any online video can be played, whether it be Youtube, Megavideo, or any other means, it will work on the Archos, brilliant and certainly worth the £20 the app costs.

So I certainly think the Archos is worth a shout. The large 30gb hard drive, combined with the flash allowing web browser and cut price, make for a great media player, but I do not think it is as good or cool as the ipod touch yet, but its getting there.

Summary: Recommended if you hate ipods
