Advantages: So many different features
Disadvantages: Not enough storage space
I was given this as a present on my 14th birthday in 2004, back when mp3 players were still a fairly new phenomenon. I remember being unsure of what it was and what it did!
However, with the introduction of iPods and more sophisticated mp3 players, it is easy to see how the humble Creative Muvo could be overshadowed. However, I own an iPod and find my Creative Muvo to be much more useful in many aspects.
Obviously the key feature of this gadget is that it plays music files (mp3s to be precise!) With 128MB of storage this allows for around 30 music files to be stored (depending on file sizes). Whilst this is nothing compared to the amount of songs you can store on an iPod, this tiny lightweight device is really durable and easy to use. Changing song is as simple as flicking a wheel, and volume adjustment is done by 2 buttons on the side. There are also shuffle and repeat modes.
I would guess so far it might be a little difficult to see why anyone would really prefer a basic mp3 player to something more advanced. The main reason I still use my Creative Muvo regularly is that it also doubles up as a memory stick and a dictaphone.
The main part of the mp3 player where all the controls are easily slides out ready to be plugged into a USB port on a computer. Whilst I am sure the intended reason for this is to manage music files on the mp3 player, you can put any kind of file you want onto it - I've often used it to transfer Microsoft Word documents and PowerPoint presentations from school to home and vice versa.
Probably the most important part for me is the 'recording' feature. I am a budding musical theatre performer and often use my Creative Muvo to record harmonies. The 128MB storage space allows for around 8 hours of recording time when there is nothing else on it. The sound quality of recordings is good and I can either plug headphones into the mp3 player in order to listen to them, or transfer the files onto my computer, where it is really easy to organise them as WAV files. A similar device like a dictaphone could cost as much as £40 and these can't even be connected to the PC!
The Creative Muvo has been a huge help to me over the past 5 years and I don't see that changing for a long time yet.
Summary: My best gadget friend!
