Advantages: Fantastic quality, plenty of features, incredibly hard wearing
Disadvantages: Bulky
I bought my iriver around 4 years ago. I wanted an alternative to the ipod as I wanted something that would last and something that would give me quality.
You can easily drag files onto this, including music, picture and text files. It plays a variety of different file types including the uncompressed flac files and the sound is excellent.
It can be slow loading up if it is quite full but all you need to do is visit the mysticriver site and you can find plenty of information about the open source firmware Rockbox. It's simple to download and put on the player and the Iriver becomes very fast loading up, however much is on it and it can easily be customised to look however you want it to. As it is open source, it gets modified and improved all the time. I never had any problems with the years I used Rockbox. You still have the original firmware on there so you can go back to that at any time.
I dropped my Iriver on a few occassions, including down the hard stairs at work and on a hard bathroom floor and I couldn't even see a scratch, I'm amazed at how hard wearing it is. There is even a test on mysticriver to see what it will take to break it, it's not easy.
I would still have had my Iriver now had I not lost my bag recently. I do miss it. It cost just over £200 at the time and I got many years wear out of it and could have got many more years so it is definitely value for money and if you have any problems whatsoever there's a great deal of help to be found on the internet to help you.
I did have to change the battery in once as it had run down over the years. It meant unscrewing the back and pulling it apart but it wasn't too difficult, I watched a video to show me what to do and the battery was only around £10-£15. You can go days without charging the battery usually while using it a lot.
It is bulky compared to what is around now but it never really bothered me. Iriver is a make worth looking into, whichever model you go for.
