For example, it seems as if the random selection is File 1, file 20, file 30, etc. It plays a song from each then repeats until every song in each file is played before it changes to a new file. I find myself using the remote to skip songs way too much. The other thing is when plugged into my system in it's docking station, there is no volume control. I have owned the JVC XA-HD500 for about 4 months now and it has turned into my primary home stereo. With the 6 GB of storage space I have 1271 songs on it with 1292 MB to go. To function properly you need to get each song "fixed" by using each file's property page to sort the artist, title and genre. Once done you can chose from any of those areas or just hit "All" and it will play for days. I only have 2 complaints and they are minor. Random play mode, it isn't too random.
