I have owned the JVC XA-HD500 for about 4 months now and it has turned into my primary home stereo. With the 6 GB of storage space I have 1271 songs on it with 1292 MB to go. To function properly you need to get each song "fixed" by using each file's property page to sort the artist, title and genre. Once done you can chose from any of those areas or just hit "All" and it will play for days. I only have 2 complaints and they are minor. Random play mode, it isn't too random. I will hear the same artists a few times within an hour and others I won't hear at all. For example, it seems as if the random selection is File 1, file 20, file 30, etc. It plays a song from each then repeats until every song in each file is played before it changes to a new file. I find myself using the remote to skip songs way too much. The other thing is when plugged into my system in it's docking station, there is no volume control. You need to use the speaker's volume to adjust levels. The remote has great range, I have changed songs from 30 feet away. Plus's include the ability to drag and drop files. No need to have special software to run it's own type of music. My IPod friends see it and want to trade theirs in. It plays MP3, Wav files ripped from CD's, or acquired from anywhere. I have not found a music format it will not play. Battery life is exceptional, on long plane flights (15+ hours) I have used it with it never dying on me. I paid $199.99 for it in a military PX overseas. It comes with headphones, a remote (w/battery), a docking station, USB cord, charger, software and a cord for direct plug in play in vehicles with an MP3 player input jack. I felt I got my money's worth and am happy with it. Out of 10 I give it a strong 8. Awaiting upgrades.
