Advantages: light, good headphones, few good features
Disadvantages: instructions are lacking, memory smaller than stated
I wanted an MP3 player with basic features, without paying the mad prices of the Apple brand. Samsung is a name and brand I trust, so I went for the Samsung YP-U6. It comes in a choice of black or metallic pink, I opted for the pink. I was slightly worried it would be a garish neon colour - but it is a lovely softly metallic deep pink and not at all embarassing to carry around. It is small and light with a 1 inch by half an inch display which is surprisingly clear and easy to read. It comes with a pair of white samsung headphones which have excellent sound quality and are a joy to use. It has one large button for pause/play with a square button around the edge for left/right - choosing songs and up/down - volume control. There is an on/off button on top which also locks the MP3 player which is a very useful feature if you like to tuck it in your pocket while you listen to music. Next to the on/off button is a back button, and a button which encompasses many features such as recording, changing the play mode, changing the sound mode, adding songs to a playlist and deleting files. You have to go into settings to edit what the button does, and I found this quite confusing to figure out at first. The instructions that originally come with the MP3 player are pretty much non existant - they tell you how to turn it on and plug it in and the rest of the manual is inside the MP3 player - all good and well if you can find your way around a PC but unfortunately I can't and it took me a while to find. It also has an FM radio feature which is okay, the quality isn't excellent but the same as any other FM radio player. Another feature I really like is the fitness feature, it's very basic but fun to use. You input your weight once and it remembers. Then you choose a basic excersise activity such as slow walking, fast walking, running, etc and choose to listen to your own songs or the radio, and press go. Tuck it in your pocket and get on with your activity and at the end it estimates how many calories you have burned. It makes going for a walk or run whilst juggling MP3 players/pedometers/timers a lot easier. The battery life is very good, and very easy to charge. The MP3 player doesn't come with a USB cable, instead, the USB stick is inside the MP3 pllayer and you slide it out and plug it in. I found this to be a very worthwhile feature as I'm constantly losing cables. The software which comes with it is Samsung Kies and has lots of features such as a music organiser and music player. You use a very simple drag and drop method to put the songs from your computer onto the MP3 player. You can also organsie them into your own folders. The version I bought advertises as 4GB but is in fact 3.6GB, I don't know if this is standard practice for MP3 players but I found it quite disappointing. Overall it's a very good MP3 player especially as a starter or for someone who isn't fussed about having too many fancy features. Worth the price.
Summary: overall very good
