Advantages: Battery life, design, ease of use, quality
Disadvantages: Not an iPod
iTunes has crashed again, iTunes has refused to transfer my track as it wasn't brought from the iTunes store, iTunes has stolen my car (last comment not true)
Let me start this review by saying Goodbye iTunes, hello Windows Media Player.
That's right, if like me you hate iTunes then this is what you need. Not only can it be used with ease with your existing copy of Windows Media Player which we all have installed with Windows 2000/XP/Vitsa, but also I install software on the disc and presto, a little icon appears on my vista sidebar and I can drag and drop all my movies and videos directly on to the Walkman, no fuss whatsoever.
As the popularity grows for Apple and the iPod revolution, I'm glad to say I USED to own one, sure it was a great ride whilst it lasted, but you always felt as though your iPod could do so much more for you.
The iTunes issue was key for me, a terrible bit of software which unfortunately was the only way to put songs on your iPod. It's a Marmite thing, love it or hate it. I, like most of my friends feel sick when near it.
So onto what's so hot about this Walkman.
- It's Sony
Yes the creators of the Walkman, they have been at the portable audio game for donkey's years, they have the technology to build it, the experience to innovate and the common sense that lack's Apple at times. You pay for the brand, the build quality and design.
- Sound
Well it's what you brought this for, sure it looks nice, but you want it to sound good also. This is helped a lot by the fact you get some awesome headphones out the box, these cost £39 to buy separately so you know these are the business, they perform stunningly, tested with a few genres from jazz to hip hop, it copes with ease.
- Design
You need it to look good, a nice response when someone says "hey, look at my new iPod" It's got a similar style to most of the newer Sony Ericsson walkman phones, looks new age and easy to use. The buttons are well placed and its easy to navigate around the bold menus.
- Software
A key factor, you don't want to be messing around all day trying to get your latest CD or MP3 download transferred over. This is easy; either use Media Player to sync your library or install the software which comes with the player on disc and drag and drop your files onto the walkman icon.
- Battery Life
Another key one, this is a portable music player by the way, something you can use out and about. Why would you want to be charging this every 2 hours??? It has a quick charge time and a full battery life of 40 HOURS! Nearly two day's continuous music playing. It's like the Energizer bunny of the portable music world.
- Final Comment
For the price you won't get anything that compares, much better than my iPod Nano which cost nearly double and didn't have half the features. I love it and will be upgraded when the new series arrive. Goodbye iPod...
Summary: Easily the best thing since my first cassette walkman nearly 12 years ago

- 26/02/09 Good review, these Sony's are excellent and good value. I have an 8gb from last year's range and screen, sound, durability and ease of use put this way ahead of an Ipod. Sony knows what they're doing with portable audio more than anyone else. |
