There's no doubt really that both Sony and Apple are the best MP3 player-smiths around at the moment. But I've never really understood why ipods are the most highly rated, I guess it's probably because they were the first compact high-quality MP3 players on the market. But nowadays I think that Sony are leaps and bounds ahead of Apple when it comes to overall quality.
I have owned two ipods, and two Sony Walkmans in my time, and it isn't even a competition. The Sony Walkman is better in almost every compartment (with the possible exception of cosmetics). The sound quality is clearer, more deep, rich and crisp. The menus are far more user-friendly, and the number of options you have during playback are better and easier to navigate through.
The biggest difference though, is the battery life. The Sony Walkman absolutely destroys the ipod when it comes to that. I reckon I can get at least 8 hours play with the volume right up with one of these, compared to around half of that on an ipod.
If you want a gadget that does just about everything apart from wash your feet for you, then of course go for the iphone (as Sony haven't really made an equivalent of that yet). But if you just want an MP3 player, definitely go for one of these.
