I traded UP to this unit from my Apple iPod 160GB.

I say traded up because the sound quality surpasses (in my opinion) the iPod. The clarity and richness of the sound is so much better than my iPod ever produced. I use Bose in ear headphones and they enhance the sound quality a lot over the Sony headphones provided, but the Sony ones are very very good.

The built in preset sound menus are very good but in the end I opted to set the equalizer custom settings to get the sound I was looking for.

The unit itself is very light and although it feels fragile it is very sturdy and the added advantage of no moving parts means it is more likely to survive minor knocks.

The screen is very high quality and big enough to watch video on although not for any prolonged length of time I would say.

One thing I am not so impressed about is the lack of a gapless playback facility. Some of the albums I have ripped to play on it have seamless playback but once in MP3 format there is a noticeable gap between them which I find irritating but not enough so to wish I hadn't bought it, not all my music is gapless and I guess if I looked hard enough I could find some software that would rip an album into one entire MP3 file and not individual tracks.

The unit is sleek and looks good, not sure Sony pose any threat to Apple's dominance in this market but it is very clear that Sony's vast experience in the manufacture of high quality audio equipment shines through for me.

It's more about the sound quality and robustness than the latest fashion must have.

I don't regret my decision to switch to the Sony unit and with 40hours battery life too it is a thoroughly excellent product.
