Argos Value CD Radio
Advantages: the price and well built
Disadvantages: radio stations take a while to fine tune
The idea of being able to get a radio and CD player combined for under twenty quid must surely appeal. I am a biggie on sound quality but I am also a biggie on price, so weighing up you have to consider what you are getting and whether it represents value for money. I think what we have here is a solid product for the price and there aren't many players you can get for such a good price, that have a radio too.
We had one of these in the kitchen a while back. You want something in the kitchen to listen to while preparing food, but you don't want the most expensive hi fi that is going to get covered in oil and grease. This is one of those products where it doesn't really matter if it gets dirty, because it's so cheap.
A neat design with a stylish look, silver throughout and a couple of speakers at the front, delivering enough volume for even the larger sized rooms. It would also work well as a lounge or dining room device, or maybe to warm up dinner parties with.
The CD feature is easy to work with the basis stop and start and skip and pause features there and these allow quick and easy use, though we did notice occasionally the skip button would get stuck if the discs were much older.
The radio side is pretty good and though the tuning is not one hundred percent precise you can can a decent enough signal and pick up most major stations and use the aerial to enhance the signal. You can turn the radio on and off with a switch and flick between modes easily too. As for the sound quality, okay it isn't amazing, but it does just fine for quiet levels and the unit is sturdy enough to withstand a few knocks here and there. It runs off the mains with a generous cable. A good buy and handy for portable use too.
Summary: quite a good buy
