Advantages: Great sound, very easy to use, not a bad price, compact, loads of channels

Disadvantages: Plastic

At Christmas, as I was browsing the shops for inspiration regarding an unexpected present for my husband, I spotted the range of Dab radios in Currys. Speaking to the assistant he told me that some of the more expensive Dab radios actually did not produce any better sound than the less pricey and less elegant looking ones. I decided to go for the Pure Digital One priced at just under £50 and hoped that it would fit the bill.

This radio was in either white or black plastic. I decided that the black would probably be more serviceable as white often yellows with time and the white one looked a little tacky. The black was a shiny black that did look and feel rather lightweight and was a bit too plasticy looking also, if you know what I mean. Still four months down the road this radio has been worth it's weight in gold. I suppose that is not a good comparison though as it is so light but you know what I mean.

Initially it seemed a little complicated to get going, however this is far from true. You just push the stand by button on and you are away. A small LCD display section lights up and shows the waveband and channel. We use our radio from mains electric but it is possible to buy a battery pack etc, however it was not provided at purchase. Oh, 'Our Radio' sounds bad when it was a present.

There is a metal ariel on the top which you can extend to a fair height. We must have good reception where we live as this radio is great even without this.

There are small push buttons which you press, to say, select the channel. Once this is pressed you use the central large knob. You just turn this around until you have selected the channel which you want. Similarly if you press the volume button you twiddle the large knob to increase or reduce the volume.

It is possible to switch between FM and Dab and there is an automatic tuning button. The menu offers many possibilities which I have to say we have not used. The radio has quite a few pre-set channels also and does offer far more channels than a traditional radio. The booklet that came with this radio was thorough but of course we have not read most of it.

What I do like about this radio is that it has a great sound and is very easy to use. The retail assistant told us originally that it did not matter how expensive the radio is as so much depends on the Dab reception in the area where you live.

I wish the radio looked a little better but as a plain black item I suppose it is not bad. It is compact at I suppose about 9"x6"x2" and being so lightweight is easy to move around.

I am pleased with this purchase and Hubby uses the radio so much that I know he is also. It offers a very clear sound with no crackle or drifting of channels. Whether you listen to this Pure Digital One radio with the volume full on or turned down very low the sound is perfect.

Recommended as a good value buy with excellent performance. My one quibble is that as it is made from lightweight material it will not be tough and resistant to accidents.

Never really seen the point of DAB at home. I only listen to one station anyway. In the car, now that's another matter.
