This is my first review in electronics - so take it easy on me with the criticism!
In honesty, it doesn't get more retro than the Roberts revival radio range. Whenever I think of vintage, retro or anything of that sort - this springs to mind instantly. Last year I spotted the Cath Kidston Electric Flower Roberts radio (RD60CKEF DAB/FM) in the Cath Kidston store in Guildford and I had to have it! I had just received a lot of money for my birthday so I decided to treat myself.
The radio costs £199.99 and can be brought from either Cath Kidston directly or Amazon. I have heard it is also on eBay sometimes and other online stores (just be careful they aren't scams).
Roberts began designing radios around 70 years ago (or more) and are one of the most well known in the business. I think they really did well to join forces with Cath Kidston on this one and a few other quirky designs and all are so different to others on the market. I did originally have my eye on the pastel pink - but this is so much nicer! So retro!
My Cath Kidston radio is the one in the image, as I found it to be cute and girly matching identical with my kitchen where it was to be stood for the rest of time. The radio is approximately 30cms wide and 20cms high. I think the depth is approximately 15cms (but I haven't actually measured this is just a guess). The background of the radio is cream with big multi-coloured retro flowers all over it. They are in different colours which makes it go with almost any room colour scheme imaginable. Its quite hippy like whereas the others in the range are more original Cath and stick to the floral designs she is most known for (if you google it you will see the other designs as there is too many to list). The front panel is a speaker which is a medium brown (sticking to the vintage) and Roberts is in gold just above. There is a strap across the top in the same print so you can carry the radio if you choose to and the buttons you need are under the strap on the top of the box. It is quite lightweight and can be carried easily due to the strap.
The radio is battery or mains powered meaning you're able to sit it at home and charge it or take it out and about with you and it would still work. I have found the battery can last for up to a week (obviously not all day every day) without needing to be charged or new batteries. The aerial comes from the gold box section on the top and can be pushed down if its not in use, or extended for listening.
I love the fact it has an auto tune so you don't have to faff about - but you can also use the dial to tune it yourself. There is an LED screen so you can see which channel you're on thats very helpful and quite modern for such a vintage item. The radio is DAB rather than the usual FM making for better sound quality and finding channels is a lot easier - of course you still need to use the little dial to find a channel but its easier and less painful for your ears without the crackle.
Due to the design, I didn't really think the radio would be up to much but once I saw that it was by Roberts I knew it would be very good quality. The sound is really sharp and the volume can go quite loud without cracking out and sounding strange - especially when listening to drum and bass. I love the fact there is a port to plug headphones in as it means I could listen to it to myself whilst doing coursework. I also used the headphone to headphone adaptor to use it for my ipod and it worked really well. The only downside is that my home doesn't really pick up very good radio signals for channels such as Kiss100 and CapitalFM so I'm stuck with Heart or Radio1 (more often than not Classical music!).
I would recommend this item if you're looking for an amazing quality radio thats something a little out of the ordinary - but it does come at quite a price. I love using mine as an iPod dock rather than the more modern ones for sale - its just so stylish and different! I have had so many compliments on the way it looks and sounds, especially when people think its about 30+ years old!
