Roberts RD60 Revival
by kerry123
The most striking thing about this classy radio is its beautiful appearance. The buttons on the Roberts Revival RD-60 Radio are retro style, soft and darkish in colour. My Roberts Revival RD-60 which I received as a birthday gift last year from my father, looks incredible in my lounge. However, if I transferred this radio to my kitchen I ... don't think it would look quite as fitting. The black casing of the Roberts Revival RD-60 is what called my attention the most simply because it is shiny and without a doubt attractive. Furthermore, the golden coloured aerial, front grille and controls enhance the retro look associated with this trendy looking Roberts Revival RD-60 model. If you are not into retro then maybe you won't be into the style of this radio either.
The Roberts Revival RD-60 has a very good sound quality but in comparison, I have heard from other friends and relatives that the RD-50 model in terms of sound, is a slight improvement on this. As far as I can gather, there is no huge difference and I can confirm that while the RD-60 broadcasts human speech and classical music excellently, it isn't that great if you enjoy listening to pop music. Apparently, the sound produced from a RD-60 is slightly more restricted than it is with a RD-50. With continued use, the sound quality may increase but, unfortunately there is no technique available to alter the sound output. The RD-60 does not contain a manual equaliser which is more powerful than a DRC. The fact that this radio contains a DRC means that it makes quieter sounds clearer when there is a great deal of noise. I have noticed that when I plug in my headphones the sound quality of my RD-60 improves greatly. I have some Apple earbuds which I purchased for my iPod and they sound magnificent with this radio.
An advantage of the RD-60 is that it has an infinite number of preset buttons. One of the main features which I like the most is that it has a "favourite" button which is preset to Classic FM which you can reprogram. I always enjoy a relaxing listening experience when listening to my RD-60 due to the fact that I can pick up powerful FM and DAB signals and there is never much hissing sound to be heard. The RD-60 in short, boasts the following featurs firstly, a port for headphones secondly, an auxillary-in on the top and thirdly, a line-out at the rear, so it enables you to use it as a speaker for an MP3 player or connect its output to some improved quality speakers. In contrast, one of the main disadvantages of the Roberts Revival RD-60 in my opinion is that it does not have an internal memory. In relation to value for money, I would say that it is expensive when you realise that there are very few parts inside this radio however, the classy, glamourous look of the RD-60 radio is certainly what calls the attention of customers.
The Roberts Revival RD-60 radio has an atrractive wooden case which feels well built and strong. In addition to this, the comfy leather handle fits gently in your hand. Also, there is a clasp on one side of the case and hinges on the other. The clasp and the hinges hold the rear of the radio in place. When I opened up my RD-60 I could see a speaker, various cables and space to fit four D-cell batteries. I have had my radio in working order for just under 120 hours with some new batteries or if you prefer, you can use the adaptor in the box and plug it in.
If you are a radio lover like I am then hurry and add this to your wish list. It isn't the best digital radio on the market but, it is certainly 100 percent classy! I wanted a retro radio and I have to say, I am very satisfied with it. Why not see if you are as impressed as I am?! Read the complete review |

Roberts R 9917
by MEL0611
Even though we have not had many sunny weeks, there have been those odd weekends and evenings that we have been able to sit out in the garden. We have an IPod dock in our conservatory but to listen to the IPod outside we have to have it turned up quite loud so when chatting with my other half we decided to invest in a portable radio. I ... am the first to admit that I am not the greatest at technology and so we spent some time looking together. I was not looking for a DAB radio, but just something that would sit on the patio table when we were having a cuppa of an evening and that was a bit of background accompaniment when working in the garden. We decided to invest in the Roberts R 9917 portable radio and here are my thoughts on the product.
We eventually brought the radio from the Amazon website and it cost us around the £49.99 mark. This I have to admit was a little bit more money than I planned to spend on the radio but my other half insisted this was the best of the bunch. He was also familiar with the Roberts brand and so we picked and purchased! I have not seen this radio anywhere else than Comet but there is a few online retailers offering the radio.
When the radio came I was pleased to find that it was just the size we wanted, small and compact so if we did want to take it out and about with us it was small enough to do so! The radio is a silver colour and looks really quite sleek .The radio came with a good instruction manual as well as one year manufacturer's guarantee. The radio needs two AA batteries for you to get it going and I have found that you can get a really good amount of listening time out of the radio before they run out, I would guess at around 24 hours worth.
The radio may have a lot of buttons on the front but all are easy to identify and operate. The actual size of the radio is about 101 x 82 x 25 mm so you can see it is small; it is also lightweight and comfy to hold. There are FM, MW and LW frequencies available on the radio and I have found the stations that we wanted to listen to have been easy to tune in. I also found that the volume was really good, it allowed me to turn the radio up and the sound would not become distorted. There is a speaker that sits on the front left hand side of the radio and this is of great quality considering the radio is quite small.
The radio had no problems in finding the stations, I wanted to listen to a station on an FM frequency whilst my other half wanted to listen to the Talk Sport station on a MW frequency, and both were easy to find using the frequency buttons. There is also an extending Ariel that comes with this pocket radio and that helps if you do find you are in an area where the station is breaking up a little bit.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this little portable radio. I thought at first the price was a little high but I have been pleased in the long term with the quality and just how easy it is to use the radio.
4 out of 5 from me

Roberts ECO4W Ecologic 4
by yazzy_bum
Set up to this radio is really simple (I didn't even need to read the instructions) the radio automatically searches for all local digital radio stations when you switch it on.
This product is portable, and unlike other portable radios has a decent battery life. The radio is quite large which is a minor disadvantage; however it is ... reasonably lightweight and would be perfect for a camping trip etc. Alternatively this product can also be plugged in, which is how I use it most of the time as a bedside radio- it is Eco friendly- in terms of power consumption. I have the radio in black; it looks sleek and modern and would suit most home environments. The display screen lights up in quite a bright blue when switched on, this is un- noticeable during the day, but may be quite distracting at night time.
My favourite feature to this radio is that the song playing can be displayed on the screen. The main disadvantage I have found is the lack of radio alarm, there doesn't seem to be an option to set an alarm, which seems a basic yet useful feature. Overall although this radio has some minor downsides, it is reliable, versatile and plays good quality sound. Read the complete review |
