Advantages: durable, lightweight, compact adn reliable
Disadvantages: not DAB
About 4 years ago before going on a camping trip to Norfolk, I made the decision to spend £10 on a "decent" portable radio.
I had not any previous luck with a couple of wind up radios that simply didnt charge or were not a good enough quality in reception. I purchased the Sony icf-s22 from a Woolworths store for £9.99 and have simply not looked back.
It a tough, durable portable FM/AM radio that takes two AA batteries. The power consumption is excellent, as i seem to have to change the batteries very rarely indeed. I use the radio on all camping trips and on my boat and i have never had any complaints. Be it about reception, battery usage or portability this littlke gem of a radio ticks all boxes.
The reception is very good indeed with an ariel that retracts and folds neatly away...but most importantly , after years of rough and tumble use the ariel is still there!.
The radio comes in silver casing that does not scratch easily with a handy hand strap that again is very durable. There is a red LED indicator to tell you the battery and tuning strength and comes complete with a headphones slot.
Downside
The only obvious real disadadvante to this this pocket radio is that it is not DAB, which in all honesty has never been a problem for me but might for others who are used to the crisp reception of digital radio.
Conclusion
This really is a solid reliable portable radio that has been a very good friend to me for many a year. I still see this radio on the shelves of many shops including Tesco, Superdrug and Woolworths for prices ranging from £5.99 to £9.99 and if anyone is looking for a reliable battery operated portable radio....look no further.
Thanks
Ben
Summary: £10 well spent on a lasting durable radio.
