Advantages: Cheap and does the job
Disadvantages: Quite basic & radio tuning isn't easy
My son is 9 years old and a very light sleeper. He is now at the age where he can tell the time but in a dark room, he can't always tell what time it is and sometimes he gets up at a ridiculous time in the night , thinking it is morning and the clock on his wall, doesn't light up so is no good for telling the time at night.
For this reason, I decided to get him a digital alarm clock to put on his bedside table so he can tell the time during the night. I purchased the CR106 Tesco Value CR106 Radio Alarm Clock for him.
The main reason I chose this one was the price. It wasn't a concern to me what features it had or what it looked like, provided it showed the time digitally in the middle of the night so my son would know what the time was. This one is exclusive to Tesco stores and costs just £5.39 which I thought was a real bargain.
I wasn't concerned about it having a radio as it wasn't why I was purchasing it but my son was quite impressed with the fact that he got a radio as part of the clock, though I did warn him that the radio quality on a radio like this wasn't going to be brilliant - and I was right.
We tried to tune the radio in to our local radio station as I assumed that this would give my son the best sound quality but even this was a bit of a chore as it is an analogue tuner so trying to tune it in was a little taxing as you have to get it right and the slightest movement of the dial will distort the sound quality even more and even at its best, the sound level was intermittent and it wasn't particularly clear and concise as it was a little scratchy at times.
The clock is predominately black with a large LCD screen with bright red digital display indicating the time, and this shines clear and crisp in the middle of the night, though not so bright that it startles my son's eyes.
A clock radio as cheap as this was never going to have many features but it does contain the usual alarm clock features such as the snooze button, alarm clock and a built in speaker.
It is mains powered, but can take batteries too and it requires 4x AA batteries if needed and it does have a decent lead so if your bedside table isn't next to a plug, you should have sufficient lead length to make it reach so you don't have to re-arrange your furniture in order to accommodate this clock!
I would say this is only really sufficient enough for bedroom use. It is really bland and cheap looking and isn't the kind of clock you would use as a decorative feature in any rooms where items are on show, but for a kids bedroom, or even an adults if you are not bothered by brand names or quality, this is absolutely fine and comes with a recommendation from me.
Summary: A decent clock radio for the price
