a long lasting battery with extreme power yet you must pay the price with the expense.

Typically great quality from duracell, the power lasts very long compared to most batteries of the same size in the market. The sizing is also very accurate as I have never had any problem fitting this battery into any appliance I have needed it for unlike many cheaper batteries that are sometimes slightly bigger or smaller than the fitting encasement within the appliance causing difficulty when inserting the battery. Probably one of the most expensive batteries in its range, however you do recieve extremely good quality compared to cheaper versions, and of course these batteries will last you at least 3 times as long saving you time and money in the long run, and of course the environment :P. Be careful when purchasing duracell batteries from any markets or small shops as there are quite a few fakes around and these will not be near the same quality as the real product.

      A superb battery!

Recently I have moved into a new flat. Being rented it has plenty of safety features within it and one of those is fire alarms throughout. As far as I understand it these are connected to my electric supply but also need batteries as well. I can't just disconnect them anyway which is a bit of pain cos of late all of the alarm batteries have been failing on me though I was told that the batteries within them had been in 8 months and they happened to be this brand.

One night, late one of the alarms decided to keep peeping. Not being familiar with alarms of any kind at the time I managed to disconnect it but like I stated earlier it was still peeping so I ran to my local shop which was Spa before it closed and the only batteries they had on sale were these ones costing £3.49 each and so I bought a couple and popped one in a cupboard as a spare!

      The Packaging:

The battery comes attached to an orange and black piece of cardboard and on it we are told that it is Duracell Plus Power, 9V/MN1604 'Long Lasting Power Guaranteed' and then on the back of the packaging other information listed includes cautions being given (and in different languages too) and contact details for Duracell are listed. Simple, easy to dispose of packaging this is and its as informative enough as it needs to be.

      The Battery Itself:

The battery is bronze and black in colour and we are clearly told what it is on it and its a square in shape with two little stumpy bits to connect up to things on one end on it.

This battery of course can be used in a variety of things and for a variety of purposes. Easy to connect, well it was to my fire alarm anyway and thats it job done. I have used one of these in the past as well on a toy battery operated car and it gave plenty of use in that but course it depends how often you use things eh!

Offering to be longer lasting than most other batteries of the same type, I have no idea by how much as we simply arnt told. However I find Duracell to be a brilliant brand and one I can trust and I am willing to pay a little more for quality always!

Duracell are a name are synonmous with batteries and generally when I'm buying batteries I tend to go with one of two brands, this being one of them. I guess I'm a creature of habit and I grew up loving the Duracell Bunny.

        ---------------------------------
        Buying the Batteries
        ---------------------------------
The Duracell Plus MN1604 Alkaline were batteries I bought to go in the smoke detectors throughout my house. I have a total of eight smoke detectors throughout my house and so needed a total of eight of these batteries. I bought these batteries from my local Tesco's and a pack of 4 cost me just £8.00 (or £2.00 each). The only other 9V battery that was cheaper was the Tesco Value battery which was only £1.00 per battery. Although there was this cheaper option, as I was planning to use the batteries for my smoke alarms, I would rather go with something that was more quality.

        ----------------------------------
        The Packaging
        ----------------------------------
The batteries came in a packet that had a cardboard backing and a plastic covering over the top. Removing the batteries from the packaging was not difficult as they could be pushed out via the cardboard at the back. The 9V size of the batteries was clearly marked on the packaging. There was also a use by date on the packaging and on the batteries themselves - and they had a shelf life of 5 years from the date of purchasing - which seemed fairly decent.

        ---------------------------------
        Installation
        ---------------------------------
Installation is typical for any battery. You put the battery into the battery holder in the direction indicated on the appliance (look and the + and - markers). I find it easier to put these in if you put the bottom bit (the smooth bit without the connections) in first.

        ---------------------------------
        How long does it last?
        ---------------------------------
As far as I understand it, the idea of the Duracell Plus battery is that it is supposed to last at least up to 40% longer than non-Duracell Plus batteries. Unless I carried out a scientific comparative test I would have no way of verifying this information - and I most certainly am not dedicated enough to carry this out! However, although my smoke alarms recommends that I change my battery every 6 months, I had these batteries in for a year and they were still working at the end of the year. Although at the end of the year I did change the batteries for safety reasons (despite the fact they were still working), I then transferred 2 of them to my son's electric train motor (which gets heavy use!) and it lasted for about another three months. I was quite impressed with this!

I do know that I have used the Tesco Value version of the 9V batteries in my sons electric train motor and they only lasted about 3 months. I don't know how much energy smoke alarms use, but clearly the Duracell 9V are better as they lasted for a year in the smoke alarm and then 3 months in my son's toy. Perfect.

        --------------------------
        Any Negatives?
        --------------------------
One thing that I really do think these batteries should have is a power-check button - which unfortunately they don't have. Although I don't think its absolutely necessary to have the power check button, I do think its a good way of being able to plan when you need to replace them, rather than just waiting for them to run out and for that to be the first indication that you need new ones. That can, at times, be really inconvenient! Other Duracell batteries seem to have these, but the 9V Plus batteries seem to be missing this feature, which is shame.
i haven't ever found that these batteries have leaked and made a mess over any appliance I have used them in.

These batteries are not rechargeable - but then this is not necessarily a bad thing as my local fire department (who installed my smoke alarms) advised me to not use rechargeable batteries for smoke alarms as they do not last as long or are as reliable.

        -------------------------
        Disposal
        -------------------------
Duracell say that these batteries can be recycled and in order to do this all I had to do was return them to my local Tescos where they would be dealt with and returned to Duracell. I know that all battery manufacturers have to offer collection for disposal now as part of an EU Directive in 2010.
I do think that Duracell should provide some service whereby you are compensated in some way by recycling the batteries as it would clearly save them money - and so a money-off voucher would be a nice touch.

        ------------------------
        Overall
        ------------------------
I have bought these batteries again to replace my smoke alarms and I can't see any reason why I won't continue to do so. Good, decent, longer lasting batteries.

Wicked Batteries That Will Last Forever!

These square shaped batteries are usually called 9 volt batteries, they can be used for all sorts of devices but the main thing I use them for is my clock radio.... and we also get through shedloads of them on my sister's toys but that's another story!

At one time I used to buy the cheapo supermarket own brand 9 volt batteries but eventually I realised they weren't lasting as long as they should so one day (when I was rich!) I bought a pack of Duracell Plus MD1604.... or 9 volters to be a bit more easy!

They are LOADS more expensive to buy but I swear I can see a massive difference in the amount of these square batteries I am having to buy. A wicked example is my clock radio, I run it off the battery because I've already well overloaded the plug sockets in my bedroom. Because I also use it as a radio during the day I realised it was draining the cheap batteries much too fast and in the long run it was costing me a fortune.

Now though I've had this Duracell battery in for about 3 months and it's not showing any signs of running out, the supermarket batteries would have definately needed replacing at least a month ago so even though these are a bit more expensive in the long run it will work out to be a cheaper way of powering the clock radio.

I know clocks aren't exactly the most heavy duty product available so I'll give you a better example of just how BRILLIANT these batteries are. My 3 year old sister has got this bear that walks and talks and everything, it's remote control and takes 2 x 9 volt batteries in the back of the bear to make it work. The supermarket batteries were lasting about an hour in it and my sister was getting more and more annoyed at this gorgeous bear not working properly, it ended up in the cupboard because we just couldn't keep replacing the batteries at such a rate.

When I put 2 of these Duracell Plus 9 volters in though it powered up straight away and the batteries only died YESTERDAY, that's 6 weeks later than a supermarket brand battery would last for!

I think these are brilliant batteries, they keep their charge just about forever and even though they are quite pricey they work perfect and aren't going to leave you in the lurch by running out at a bad time.

AND you can stick your tongue on the 2 metal prongs and get a bit of an electrocution buzz running through your mouth..... bonus!!!
