I bought a spare battery for my Nikon D5000 after being out and about a few times and my existing battery running flat and so not being able to take any more photographs.
I alternate between this new spare battery and the one that came with my camera.
It seems to be exactly the same quality as the original battery, it lasts just as long when in my camera, and it takes the same amount of time to charge as the original.
It was quite expensive, there are cheaper non nikon batteries available, but I decided to just go with the Nikon battery to be on the safe side, I didn't want a cheaper battery ruining my camera.
I always carry a spare battery now, it has come in more than useful on a number of occasions, it small enough and light enough to easily carry around.
As both of the batteries are Nikon branded and I've swapped and changed them so much, I'm not actually sure which is the spare and which is the original anymore. I don't suppose this matters to much as they seem to be exactly the same anyway.
