The first part of this review is the same for my other Ryobi 18volt + reviews as they all use the same batteries; I wanted to give a background on this system and my experience with it.

I am a joiner by trade and having used many tools over the past 21 years I feel that the Ryobi 18volt plus system is very good quality for the money.
Having used a lot of other makes such as Bosch, Makita, Dewalt, Metabo, Hilti etc, I find that as they are so cheap in comparison they offer excellent value added to that the fact that they are generally well designed and well made.
The 18 volt One + system adds to their appeal as it allows you to use a whole range of power tools with one type of rechargeable battery. I have a large selection of these tools and three batteries that I can swap between them. Also you can buy the tools separately without the battery making them even more affordable.


Ryobi CAP-1801M One+ Right Angle Drill


I purchased this around 12 months ago as part of a kit; it was to be a replacement for a Makita angle drill which had come to the end of its life.

The Ryobi is nowhere near as neat as the Makita drill and a bit bulky in comparison, this is partly down to the battery on the Ryobi sticking out from the bottom of the drill, with my Makita it fit inside the shaft thus not taking up and extra space.

I should however say that this is an 18volt drill as apposed to the 14volt Makita so the battery is obviously bigger and more powerful. Ryobi have thought about it to a point as the battery does swivel around to get it out of the way and this swivelling base has angles marked on it to help you drill accurately.

Due to its size it is not as useful when working in confined spaces or when over reaching and working single handed. Also as the battery is big the drill is heavy and not very well balanced.


On the plus side this is a very powerful angle drill, making it excellent for heavier jobs that my old Makita would struggle with such as drilling larger diameter holes through joists etc.

The trigger is extra long making it easy to pull when reaching into corners etc and using single handed. The keyless chuck works well and is robust and the back of the drill is covered in rubber for comfort.
The slide for switching between forward and revere is easy to operate and works well.

The casing is plastic and good quality that will take some hard knocks which it has had to after being dropped a few times. It comes with a lanyard, handy for clipping it to your tool belt etc when swapping between tools, and also two good quality screwdriver bits.
