WHAT IS IT?
One of the prams I had for my daughter who is now 2 was a travel system that was made by Oyster and my sister bought me this buggy board to go with it because we take it in turns caring for each others children and my nephew would be able to stand on it when it was attached to my pram.
HOW DO YOU USE IT?
You fit the buggy board to the frame of the pram so that it is between the wheels that are closest to you while you are pushing it. That keeps the young child between you and the pram and that is the most safe place because they stand on this and there are no straps to stop them falling off. It is easy to fit but took quite a long time because the joints are stronger than they look like they are going to be.
WHAT I THINK
I think this is a very good idea and the buggy board is more sturdy when my nephew is on it than another buggy board I had used before. The wheels on the back are very smooth and it does not look like he is being thrown about while I am pushing the pram, he is tall for his age and I am not so I thought it was a little bit hard to have him in front of me while I was walking and sometimes had to move my whole body to get into a more comfortable position of pushing.
When my nephew was not with me I would take off the buggy board even though I knew it would take me time to get it back on because my legs are short and I kept kicking it when I was walking, that happened when my nephew was standing on it also but when he was there I remembered the board and used to get a lot of bruises on the fronts of my feet from kicking the empty buggy board when I had forgotten it was there.
This buggy board cost £35 and I kept it in very good condition so when I sold it recent I got £28 for it so it did not lose very much of its value and was very useful for getting my daughter and my nephew to the same place without very many tantrums.
4 Dooyoo Hearts.
When i fell pregnant with my second daughter i was determined that i wouldn't need to buy a double buggy (turns out i was wrong as it turns out) as my eldest would almost be 2 when baby was born and usually walked anyway so when i saw that i could get a buggy board to go with my oyster travel system i thought i had found the perfect solution to keeping my toddler close by whilst pushing the baby in the pram.
Unlike most prams you cannot just use a universal buggy board with the oyster so you have to either purchase this one or one that lascal make which from what i've seen is a lot more expensive...a clever move on oysters part to get return custom!
I actully bought mine second hand when i bought my oyster so i got it for the bargain price of £10 but looking around online you are looking at paying anywhere between £35 and £40 for it which is pretty pricey for what it is in my opinion but i guess its cheaper than buying a whole new double buggy. Its pretty readily available online at kiddicare, bambino direct etc but i can't say that i have ever seen it actually in a store but there may well be stores that stock it on the highstreet too.
The ride on board comes in a plain cardboard box with the oyster logo on in black and an illustration of the outline of the board. When you take it out the box it is in one piece so no difficult faffing about assembling it.
The board is made of a thick durable black plastic with two plastic wheels on the narrower end and two clips on the wider end. The top of the board has grooves along it to aid with your little ones grip on the board.
Attaching to the pushchair is super easy all you have to do it open the clips and click them onto the bottom back bar of your pram and hey presto your board is attached. I really like that you can flip the buggy board up into the basket of the pram without the need to unattach when you are not using the board although having said that its not hard to remove from the pram you just do the opposite of what you did to attach it so its super easy.
To use the board all you do is put your toddler on the board and they stand on it and under the handle bars meaning they can hold onto the side bars of the pram or the back of the stroller if its in forward facing mode. I did find it a little uncomfortable pushing the pram whilst it was on as you have to walk a little further back to allow the room for the board, it also makes steering alot more tricky and turning in a tight circle near impossible without tipping your toddler off which i have to admit to doing on more than one occasion, cue very disgruntled toddler!
In theory its a pretty good idea, toddler can see baby and see whats going on whilst you keep both your little darlings close by. In practice you are constantly putting your toddler back on it and trying to stop them running off, telling your toddler that their baby brother/sister really is too little to eat jelly babies no matter how hungry they look and no you can't poke their eyes and taking them on and off to negociate curbs and high door ways....its alot more hassle than i anticipated. That said i would imagine this is the same with any buggy board not just the one by oyster.
Should you be the lucky parent to a quiet, compliant toddler that does exactly what you say and likes to just stand still then this is probably a really great product but unfortunately this is definitely not my toddler and she spent the entire time either screaming because i was moving too fast or going over bumps or trying to escape because she had seen something she needed to investigate.
All in all i would not purchase this again and had i spent the full £40 on it i would of been pretty annoyed really as we only used it a maximum of three times before buying a double buggy. Its nice and sturdy and easy to use so might be great for an older toddler but i suggest looking for something else if you have a young energetic toddler like mine. I can't really fault the actual product all that much except for the price and the handicap it puts on steering so i give it 4 out of 5 stars...i would probably give 3.5 if i could!
I debated strongly when getting this product. My older son is autistic so he has trouble following instructions, has balance issues and doesn't like new things. Therefore I wasn't convinced he would use it and even if he was willing to use it would his poor balance mean he wasn't able to.
Anyway I took the risk and decided it was worth a try as at the time I was having real trouble getting out and about with my newborn and my older son. I am so very glad I opted to buy it. it is a wonderful well made product and so very worth it.
Despite my son's balance issues he is able to ride on it with ease, the board is stable even going on and off pavements. The board is also making balance easier. It makes things easier I have the pushchair seat rear facing for my younger son so the bumper bar provides a handle for my older one to hold on to so he feels safe.
I was worried the buggy board itself would be a pain to attach but it is very simple, it clips on and off easily. So you can take it off when you don't need it although you really don't have to. When not in use it clips up out the way and the pushchair can even be folded when it is on.
The other unintentional benefit is when it is clipped up it makes the basket underneath the pram more secure so you can put more items in without any risk of them falling out. Great for shopping when I have had occasions when carrier bags have tipped over and items have fallen from the pram basket.
I really can't fault this item at all to me it is a perfect product, it enhances my pushchair and I would recommend to anyone with an Oyster pushchair who has an older child who may occasionally like a ride.
