As a second car seat the Babystyle carrier appeared to be a good choice when I was looking around for one to put in my car, I have shared custody of my son and his time is split between myself and my ex-partner during the week so we had to double up on a lot of things that we had to buy when he first arrived into the world. We'd already spent quite a bit of money on the first car seat and travel system so when it came to looking for something for my car I wanted to get something that would be safe but not overly expensive.
The Babystyle range of baby products seem to be towards the 'budget' end of the scale with a full travel system and carrier costing around £250 - £280 and indeed the car seat alone cost around £60.00 when I bought it a few months ago. I was mindful of the safety aspect of buying something 'cheap' but was confident after reading online reviews that this one from Babystyle would offer something basic but without compromising on safety so decided to trust my instincts and buy one. It's the "TS2" model, predominantly black in colour with a white contrasting swirl pattern and whilst it lacks the padding of the Silver Cross car seat my ex-partner owns it still offers enough comfort for my baby son when he's out and about in it.
It's rather narrow in design and my son does sit snugly in it but it's suitable for weights up to 13kgs (28lbs) and the adjustable straps hold him well in position. The carry bar that is fixed over the seat can be adjusted relatively easily and whilst plastic-y in feel it does the job and is somewhat comfortable in hand. It's not a complicated car seat to fit into a car, it's obvious where the car seat straps go when fixing it into place and being that bit slimmer than some other seats that are available to buy means that it should fit into even the smallest of car with shorter seat belts. In my Vauxhall Meriva there's plenty of room for the seat to fit and I find that my seat belt isn't stretched to capacity like it was when I used the Silver Cross car seat and this one from Babystyle is a lot less frustrating to get into position. It's not as padded as some and I do think it looks rather cheap when compared to other car seats that are available but it does appear well made and my son does manage to fall asleep in it when we're out together in the car so I don't think it's uncomfortable for him.
The car seat is lighter than others so carrying it around isn't too problematic although the plastic carry handle can be a little irritating at times as it lacks the padding of some others. The straps that make up the harness are easily adjusted so they can grow with your child as they get bigger and for a 'first' car seat I think it offers good value for money even if it is a little basic in comparison to the big-brand named ones. It's probably better suited to someone on a tight budget if I'm being honest although it is perfectly functional and does the job it was designed to do although when the time comes for my son to go into the next stage car seat I do think I will be looking around for something with a bit more appeal and comfort.
All in all for an essential item the Babystyle TS2 car seat/carrier is Ok but nothing special, it does feel well made and durable but it lacks the padding of other car seats and is obviously a budget buy which is apparent when you see one in real life. I wouldn't be in any rush to buy anything else from the Babystyle range in all honesty but if anyone is looking for something cheap and efficient then this one could be one to consider. It does fit well into a car, its narrow design should make it suitable for the majority of vehicles including smaller cars and for around £60-£70 I do think it represents good value for money. It's usually sold as a complete travel system along with the matching pram/pushchair but can be bought separately on-line and from independent baby product stockists/market places rather than the likes of Mama's & Papa's or Mothercare but I don't necessarily think it's worth tracking down unless you only have a small budget to spend.
