I bought the Maclaren XT after looking at what seemed like 100 pushchairs, we already had a bulky Mothercare one and were looking for something a bit lighter and easier to manoeuvre. I bought the Blue and Silver version for about £200, which came with the matching footmuff, rain cover, head hugger and hand strap. The pushchair folds up small enough to fit in the boots of our Mazda 2 and Peugeot 2008, once out its easy to put up and down with a lever and a small red catch.
I started using the pushchair when my son was 5 months old, but it can be used from newborn to 3 years, and I definitely know that I'll be using this until he grows out of it. We've primarily used the pushchair with the footmuff as it has been throughout the winter, and it keeps him lovely and warm. As a cold baby, we've never had to use an extra blanket as the footmuff is very well insulated, the top of the footmuff folds down under his armpits, however you can unfold this to make it go higher up, we often do this when he's laid down to make it a little warmer for him.
The 5 point harness is great, he always seems comfy, but we have found that often whilst using the footmuff we don't strap him in as the zip comes right up to his waist and he's pretty secure. The harness is very easy to put together or come apart, and I can't imagine a child being able to undo it very easily.
We spend a lot of time using the recline feature which is really easy to do, there is a small lever on the back of the pushchair and its just a case of moving it back or forwards into the correct location, it auto locks into place. The worst thing about the pushchair is once in recline, its very difficult to get into the basket underneath, you have to push the chair up to get into it, not very conducive to a peaceful sleep for the baby!!!
Overall I love this pushchair, its so easy to use, yes the small basket is a pain, but I tend to use the handles to hold my shopping pretty easily! Would definitely recommend and well worth the money.
When it came to the time to ditch the bulky (yet practical) travel system in favour for a lightweight option, I was perplexed by the amount of strollers in the market - all claiming to be the next best thing! I wasn't sure whether to go for 'cheap and cheerful' or to opt for something a bit more expensive.
Retailing at around the £235 mark, it isn't the cheapest stroller on the market. With strollers starting at as little as £30, I was initially put off by the price point.
After reading a few reviews, I came across a blog post which quoted "most mums eventually buy a Maclaren" which made me look in to the Maclaren XT a little more. My son was about 10 weeks at the time and the fact that the seat fully reclined appealed to me greatly which is what sold it to me. It would mean that I'd be able to get my money's worth out the stroller as it would last from newborn to 3 making the price more viable.
At the time, the Maclaren XT came with a foot muff, head hugger (for newborns) and strap pads. I believe the newest models come with a strap which secures your wrist to the stroller as an additional safety feature.
Perhaps the cleverest feature of the Maclaren XT is the hood which was a huge benefit to me. The hood has various positions. Half decline which can be extended by unzipping the zip to reveal a fuller hood. You can then push the hood down further and pull down a sun visor to give full UV protection to your child. For the older children, the sun visor is transparent so they can still see what is going on!
Putting the Maclaren XT up/down is easy and can be done one handed. You simply pull out the lock mechanism (a black lever) which folds the buggy out, then you push your foot on the red lever located in the middle bottom of the pushchair and it clicks in to place. To fold the buggy, you push up on the same lever then push down on the right hand lever which folds the buggy with ease. I've probably made it sound harder than it actually is!
The stroller features a 5 point safety harness which can only be undone by an adult (or very clever child!). You have to 'pinch' both sides of the button to detach the straps.
There are several disadvantages to the buggy which should be noted. Being a stroller, the Maclaren XT is lightweight. This means that it has the potential to tip over if overweighted with shopping bags on the back. The basket isn't big (and is completely restricted if in full seat recline). I overcame this issue by buying buggy weights which solved the problem. The second issue is with the recline. It seems quite tricky to do. You have to hold both handles located below the seating unit and click out of place. The seat then reclines. You do the same to move the seat back up, except for pushing the seat up as required.
Overall, I am very impressed with the stroller.
The maclaren techno is a great buggy high quality well made and lasts forever no matter how much of a battering it takes.
The wheels on the maclaren are larger than most umbrella stroller wheels they are strong double wheels can swivel or lock for uneven terrain and can manage most terrains with ease. The buggy is really easy to fold and folds umbrella style making it easy to take most places however it is a little longer than some umbrella strollers when folded because of its height so do check it will fit your car boot it fit easily in our volvo.
The stroller handles are higher than most buggys which is great and makes it fantastic to push no bending just a great easy and light to push buggy.
The hood is fantastic its large and has a zip which you can unzip and pull the whole hood forwards creating a sunshade for baby a fantastic idea and saves on the need for a parasol. The leg rest can also be altered raised up for smaller kids and babies to rest their legs on or dropped down so that older kids can put their feet on the rubber footrest.
The shopping basket is small and the access to it is awkward you access the basket by the back of the buggy however if your child is asleep or a smaller baby when the seat is laid down the seat covers the basket so if you need to get something in or out you have to disturb your baby or child or manage without until they wake.
a great buggy high handles and a smooth ride only let down by the basket problem
