Bought this travel system as it was on a half price sale in Mothercare, reduced to £200 from £400. Considering buggies and prams can be very expensive, I thought £200 for one that included a car seat, foot muff and rain cover seemed good value. I like the animal print design as it's unisex and a bit different to others I had seen.
It is big, we'd read reviews that the handles were higher than on other systems, and with a tall husband, it seemed a good perk. I like the fact the handles are a bar, rather than 2 individual handles as if you're pushing a buggy for a long time, it's nice to be able to change your hand and wrist position a bit. The 3 wheels are nice and big, so it makes the buggy ride nice and smooth for baby, and easy to push. Ours did deflate a bit quite often, and pumping them up was a nightmare! It's really difficult to take the pump off without letting a load of air out again, so you can never get them fully inflated. We've checked for punctures a few times and can't find any, but they keep deflating, so it gets annoying.
The basket underneath is really big, can easily hold a good few shopping bags, and easy to get them under there.
The foot muff included is lovely and warm for winter. The car seat fits quite easily into the travel system, so if you drive somewhere and baby is asleep, you can transfer the car seat straight into the frame without waking baby up (in theory) although we usually found the change of air would wake her anyway. Being pushed around in the pram usually sent her back off to sleep though. The car seat faces back, towards the parent pushing the pram and sits quite high up, and when using it as a buggy, baby is forward facing, away from parent. It does lie completely flat, so good for newborns, and obviously sits up when they're older.
This is a bulky system, so it took up almost our entire car boot space and is very heavy. I never found it very easy to fold up either. So as long as you have the space for this, it's a good purchase for the price.
Another great travel system from mothercare. So nice to push with huge wheels, i've taken it through the woods and up to the cliff on the dirt tracks.
We never used the car seat but it is a very good one, very easy to shift the handle and the hood is really good on it.
The cosy toes is very cosy, both kids had sweaty feet lol. Nice size hood with window, good size shopping basket. It's quite easy to fold but as ever with a 3 wheeler the front wheel sometimes gets in the way (usually when putting in car boot) and the double button on the handle doesn't always want to do what it's told (supposed to press them both together but in hot weather only one side wanted to go in)
The only thing with this buggy is that it's very high and the handle isn't adjustable. For me and my partner it was great as we're tall, my sister and mum struggled with it at times. I have seen very short people pushing these and it's like seeing a child in the driving seat!
WHAT IS IT?
A travel system for a baby that is a 3 wheel pushchair with a car seat that is suited from when your baby is born.
The Xtreme pushchair could be bought in black, olive green and a lighter colour also but I did not see that and do not know if it was white or cream. It has got one long handle that is wide so you can hang a changing bag on it, the handle is high but the shape makes it very easy to push however tall you are. I have got an average height and thought that this pushchair felt the correct height whenever I was walking.
The seat lies back from lying flat to sitting up straight so that it can grow with your baby and the car seat is very easy to fit just by pushing it into the holes that are cut into the frame. Your baby can stay using the car seat until they are a few months old and that is very good for when you are out but I used the seat also even when my daughter was newborn because I do not like to see her squashed up inside a car seat for a long time.
To fold up the pushchair is very easy and you only have to slide one button. Mothercare say that it can be done with one hand only but I do not think that is true, I think it can be folded up with one hand but that is too hard to do.
WHAT I THINK
I have been very happy with this pushchair and have used it for 18 months nearly every day. I have got other pushchairs but I like this one because I like to walk in my spare time and the big wheels make this very easy to push even when the ground is not level, it is good to push on the path and on grass areas also and even with bumpy ground the pushchair does not shake my daughter around.
My daughter thinks this pushchair is very comfortable and she sits and lies down to sleep in it easily also. I like that the seat is wide and the sides are deep so that she can relax and stretch out when she lies down. When she is sitting the back of the pushchair gives her a lot of support so that she can sit or play in her seat and I am happy about that because she would cry if she was not comfortable.
I like how the straps fit across her body, it is a full harness that can be easy adjusted as she grows bigger. It is easy to clip open and closed even when she is being a naughty girl and will not stop wriggling when I am trying to strap her in! I think the straps would keep her safe if we had an incident when she was in the pushchair and she has not learned how to open them so that is good because one of my other daughters was able to undo her pushchair straps at the same age.
There is a basket for shopping under the pushchair but it is not very large and I think the angle is funny to put big items in, sometimes I put my tiger daughters school bags in on the way home from school to stop them from having to carry them but I can not think of anything else that would be very useful to carry in here except for small pieces of shopping.
The only one thing that I would complain about is that the pushchair is very long and heavy so that it is hard to lift into my car. I am lucky and I live nearby to the countryside so keep my pushchair open in the conservatory and do not need to put it into the car very often, I think if you lift your pushchair in and out of your car a lot you would be tired of it very quickly.
When I bought this pushchair travel system from Mothercare it cost about £350 but that included everything including the pushchair, car seat, travel bag to put your baby in to cover their legs, a rain cover and a smaller one also for when I am using the car seat only. I was happy with that price and am happy now still because I have used it a lot and the condition is still so perfect that I will use it for even longer for my country walks.
5 Dooyoo Stars.
Pushchair shopping is a minefield! Do you get a pram, a pushchair, a travel system. Who knows?! So when it came to the time of buying one I hunted around for weeks reading reviews and looking at them in shops so I thought writing a review on the Mothercare Xtream may hopefully help someone who was as confused as I was!
The Xtreame is a three wheeled travel system. It Is designed to accommodate your baby from birth to a maximum weight of 15kg. Priced at around £400, but whenever I have looked at it it had been reduced to half price. So at £200 is a very reasonably priced travel system. It is available in two colour; khaki and giraffe (black with a black and white giraffe pattern on trims. We purchased the khaki as at the time this option was on the half price offer.
The travel system includes;
1 x Pushchair 1 x Hood 1 x Shopping basket 1 x Removable bumper bar 1 x Cosytoe 1 x Infant car seat 1 x Harness pads 1 x Mothercare Weathershield®
Firstly the pushchair itself is a 3 wheeled stroller with rubber tyres and a strong frame. Around the frame fits the seat which has several settings and positions. Underneath is a basket with plenty of room for your change bag and shopping. Over the seat is a matching hood and sturdy handle. The pushchair overall is a strong and sturdy system with well fitting seat pads and accessories.
The seat has a standard 5 point harness you can adjust to your child's needs and a Cosytoe fits over the too if required. The Cosytoe is made up if two parts, the fleecy seat cover and a removable zipped top for colder weather. This Cosytoe is warm and comfortable and much better quality than some of the others I have seen. It fits snugly and is easy to out on and take off quickly. The pushchair seat itself has varying positions easily moved by a simple clip at the back. The included rain cover is also a good fit and easy to put on in at rush!
The three wheels to the system as mentioned are rubber and have an inner tube like a bike tyre. The wheels are easily removable for storage and easy to attach and detach with the twist of a clip. The tyres themselves however were a down point to us. As they are like bike tyres with a tyre and inner tube we got a puncture whilst on holiday. Easy enough to fix you may think but conventional tyre repair kits don't work that well on the small tyres and the patches often wouldn't stick well. Also although the wheels are easy to come on and off the tyres are not and it took us ages to get the inner tube out and even longer to put it back. Due to the inability to fix the puncture we also ended up having to order a new inner tube from EBay. On a plus note the front wheel has two settings allowing you to choose whether you want the wheel to swivel for very easy manouverability or fixed.
An infant carrier/car seat is also supplied with the travel system. This can be used in the car and attached to the pushchair when your baby is tiny. The seat quickly and easily slots into the system with just two slots to align up and the carry handle then locks it into place securely. When in the car it is designed to be rear facing and is again easy to install with the seat belt fastening around the seat. Our little boy is 8 months old now and is still comfortably using the carrier as the car seat in the car and it feels very safe and strong to protect them. This carrier/car seat can be used until you child weighs 13kg, which is normally between 12 & 15 months.
The pushchair measures around 49 x 46 x 82cm so isn't the smallest on the market but it suited us as we wanted a pushchair that could cope with the walks around the countryside and forest by us and the xtream ticked the boxes. However the size is a problem when in my fiat punto as although is collapses it is far too big for my boot. Luckily my other half has an estate so it's not an issue for that car. I thought that the system would collapse more than it does but the wheels tend to be the problem when trying to fit it in the boot. I can take these off to leave more room but the pushchair is still too wide to lie flat in the boot and stood upright is too tall to allow the oracle shelf to close. This is kind of our own fault for not checking it would fit when we want to mothercare to choose it but you live and learn! On the issue of collapsing the pushchair is supposed to have a one handed easy fold mechanism. While I agree it's easy you'll be lucky to use just one hand so I don't agree with Mothercare on that claim. But it does collapse by pulling in a level on the handle and pushing down at the bottom of the frame with your foot.
One more downside of the Xtream is it's weight. It's really heavy so not for those wanting something small and lightweight. Even the child car seat weighs a ton so once baby is in it your arm will drop off. However, I can put up with this as everything feels so safe and secure due to its weight and sturdiness!
Overall the Mothercare Xtream is a great travel system. It's strong, safe and we'll put together. It will suit you child for a few years so at the half price offer really is a great buy. With the included car seat it also takes the hassle of trying to buy yet something else that's a minefield, at least you can put that off for a year!
